I'm planning on getting a BMW...?

I was thinking about a '98 540i or 325i.

What should I get, price range about $6,000 max.

the 93 325i shared the same body with all 3 series produced between roughly 1993-97. The platform is called e36. So you could get a 95 325i or even a 318i that will look identical as far as the body and most of the engine, minus the 318i.

The 318is have smaller engines and are 4 cylinder. If you are fuel economy concerned then maybe the 318i will work for you. If you are into performance I would look for a an 325i"s" package these were made with extra "sports" parts and perks, beefed up. Also look closely at the mileage and the maintenance records since all 6 cyl e36's are basically the same cars :) . Good luck!

I'd go with the E39 540i.  The big V8 will put a smile on your face every time, especially if you get the manual transmission.

Of the two, I'd prefer the 3-series, since it is going to be somewhat sportier and somewhat easier on gas.

That being said, $6K ought to purchase an absolutely immaculate 1995 model. For that price, the vehicle ought to have all records, recent tune-up, new tires, etc. If not, you ought to make sure that everything works and that the wheels are proprely aligned. The selling price ought to reflect the lack of service documentation.

I would suggest the 325i, because they will save you a lot of gas compared to the 540i, also they look like more of a sports car. They e36 540i has a larger engine yet looks older and is really boxy looking.
