  1. don't tell people they've had enough like they always tell me

  2. WRITE everything down and repeat the order back to make sure it is correct. always make sure they have drinks!!! walk by your tables periodically and make sure they see you, that way they can call you over and you dont have to nagg them throughout the meal to see if they need you. always assume they want money back so tell them you will ring them up and be right back. if you assume you are getting a tip, you wont. remember.... just cuz one table is a bunch of free loading ingnorant butts, doesnt mean they all are, so dont carry that over to your other tables. and breathe!!!

  3. All of the suggestions are great, but you have to care about the guests needs as well as careing about being the best at anything you do. Watch the big tip makers and emulate them.

  4. Depending on the quality of the place you will be working, most decent restaurants already have a set of rules for their wait  staff, which will provide you with their rules for excellent service.  In general though, Pay attention to your customers and listen to them.  You can give the appearance of hurrying without actually rushing yourself.  The most important things are getting the orders right when customers tell you what they want, and comunicating those orders to the kitchen.  There's nothing worse than waiting a half hour for your meal only to be told your slip fell on the floor and the chef never got it and now it will be another 25 minutes before your meal is ready.

When you greet a table of guests, don't look around the room and wonder what and how everyone else is doing.  By focusing on your customers you show them that they are important and it makes it easier for you to do your job.  You'll get the hang of it.  Smile a lot. Give your name. Like, "Hi, I'm Jake and I'll be your server tonight.  Thank you for coming to the Watering Hole." Address the customers as Ma'am and Sir.

If you goof up and bring the wrong drink, apologize and make it right. When you goof up, MAKE IT RIGHT. That's more important than falling all over yourself with repeated apologizies.

Of course there are times when you have to scan all your tables to see if it looks like someone might need another drink, more rolls, more coffee, dessert, etc. You'll ge the hang of it.

  5. be very polite and helping. try to connect with the customers and possibly even make a joke if the opportunity knocks. always smile too. the number one thing i love in a restaurant is when they refill my drink without me having to ask to.  good luck at your new job! :]

  6. I worked my way thru Graduate School  as a waitress,  so ,  the most important things are,  * first,  be friendly but not obnoxious*   and then to have a wonderful memory, so that you can not * forget* things,   no one likes to have to ask , for things more than once.   Remember that  things also have to be averaged out,   a bad night or two does not mean you will have a bad week, the next night,  might be a wonderful night, so i always found out that it worked out in the end.   so enjoy and learn to love the job.   It can be wonderful fun.  The customers know if you love the job or just do it...
