I was wondering if you could tell me about any night time activities, you could do in the 5th arrondissement, bars, concerts, clubs. Fun things to do while i'm there. Also is there any movie theatres around there. I will be looking at monuments in the morning and want to have fun things to do at night.

  1. The 5th and the neighboring 6th arrondissements have bars, cafes, music venues, dance clubs and restaurants in such large numbers that it is all but impossible to find a major street that is not lined with them. Which you might like depends on your personal tastes which may be very different than mine.

So rather than list every place in the area just let me say that my favorite hangout is Aux Trois Mailletz at 56 rue Galand.

I usually can be found on the main floor by the piano when I'm in Paris. Many of the musicians and singers who perform there are friends of mine and its where I sing (I'm a jazz singer). Its pretty laid back and informal and the crowd is mainly locals but also with a substantial number of tourists. There are regulars who I've known for 30 years who come there almost every night. Its sort of like the TV show "Cheers" only French and with live music. Its very friendly, very welcoming.

In additon to the scene on the ground floor there is a "Grand spectacle en sous terre" which is to say a caberet show in the basement. They import singers, dancers and musicians from all over the world for what always reminds me of a French version of the 1950's Stork Club in New York. Unlike the ground floor there is an entrance charge and a lot of very well dressed people driving up in limos head down there.

But stick with the ground floor. They also have food and while not a Michelin 3 star its good solid French cooking at not unreasonable prices.

If you do go there and see a 42 year old (he looks younger) piano player with a shaved head wearing a derby that's my buddy Sylvan. Go over and ask him if he's going to make it to Texas this summer. (I'm asking everyone I send there to harrass him about it.)

NB: By the way, all restaurants post their menus where they can be read before you enter. The law requires them to do so.

  2. You simply MUST go the rue (street) Mouffetard for dinner. It's the most beautiful, winding little cobblestone street with wood timbered houses, etc., packed with great little restaurants, and they're all good. The menus are posted outside, so you can take your time strolling and choose what sounds good. There are clubs in the area too, but I'm not very familiar with them. Your waiter would be able to give you an idea though. Your best bet is to pick up a "Pariscope" or a "Spectacle" at any of the little kiosk/newspaper stands that you see on the street. They will tell you everything that is happening in Paris, by arrondissement, that night. Much of it is in English. It will also have all of the movie listings for the city, and will tell you if the movie playing is VO (subtitled) or not--a lot of movies are dubbed, so be sure to look for the VO. If you're interested in getting out the Latin Quarter, head over to the Bastille--that place is littered with bars and clubs.

  3. Parisian:

Rue mufftard (lots of small bars, clubs, cafe)

    Upbeat, younge crowd:

Narrow streets running south East from Bastille.

    Mixed crowd:

Blvd de italie and around Opera

Upscale, and most of the time impossible to get into:

    Throughout George cinq

Le Cab ( rue rivoli x rue opera )

  4. night life is great in Rue Mouffetard, its a student quarter so most bars and restaurants are cheaper. Its also a great place to spend a night.
