  1. Siena, Perugia and Assisi are great places to visit on the way to Rome from Florence.

Also, I really advise you get a good guidebook for Rome, there is too much to see and do there to answer on Y/A.

  2. Here's what to see from Florence to Rome:

    Florence

    . Uffizi

    . Ponte Vechio

    . Galleria Della Academia (David)

    . Santa Croce

    . Piazzale Michelangelo

    Lucca

    Pisa

    . Leaning Tower

    Cinco Terra (region)

    San Gimignano

    Sienna

    Assisi

    Orvieto

    Rome

    . Vatican

    . Coliseum

    . The Forum

    . Spanish Steps

    . Pantheon

    . The Borghese Museum

    . Gianicolo

    . Piazza Navona

    . Trevi Fountain

    Ostia Antica

  3. dinodino has some good suggestions. Two more good choices between Florence and Tome are Arezzo and Orvieto. Arezzo is worth a visit any time, but has a good giostra (joust) coming up on the 7th of September. The competition is between various neighborhoods and there will be parades and other events in medieval costumes.

If you're here between the 16th and 26th of October, the Eurochocolate festival in Perugia is really good.

Tivoli would be a good day trip from Rome.
