I'm planning to visit St Petersburg but i want to go via Helsinki. What is the cheapest way to get there?

  1. The cheapest way is definitely by a bus. It takes about 8 hours, including the border delays. There is a large and constantly changing list of bus operators, and they typically charge 18-25 euros one way.

    However, you would be much more comfortable taking a train. Trains don't need to stop at the border, and there's only a 15 min stop in Vyborg for passport control. The train fares start at around 50 euros, and the ride takes 5 hrs. Starting in late 2009, there will also be a bullet train ride, that takes 2.5 hrs.


  2. MAX is absolutely right. Take a train, it´s much more comfortable, they are also serving food on the train, you have much more space there, you can walk around, for instance, and above all you will avoid a lot of custom formalities and waiting on the border. The train fare is not that more expensive than the bus fare.

    I wish you a nice stay in Helsinki and of course in St.Petersburg too.
