I live in a basement with an area rug, no large rug. I wash my sheets once or twice a week. What is the best thing to do to get rid of the fleas without hurting my kittens, my child, or me? I'm due in less then a month and i need to get rid of them.

  1. Make sure you check with your Dr. about how to treat your home with something that is safe for your unborn baby and you. Advantage works really well for getting rid of fleas on the kittens. If you live in a basement, I'm afraid the upstairs part of the home will also need to be treated. Don't listen to the people telling you to get rid of the cats. Its not fair to the kittens and you will still have fleas. You should however have someone else cleaning the litter box, something I hope you haven't been doing during your pregnancy.

  2. Bomb your basement and take an overnight vacation.  Take your kittens to a bath, wear gloves.

  3. First and foremost, use a flea bomb. You and the kittens need to be out (as well as any other members of the house) of the house, so you don't need to worry about it hurting you or the baby. get a good one that kills BOTH adult fleas and eggs.

Wash everything you can in HOT water. Vacuum up the rug and DUMP the bag or canister right away.

Wash those kittens with a good flea shampoo. Ask at the pet store for one that will be safe for you to use.

As soon as the kittens are old enough, use a flea control like advantage. I think they even make one for kittens.

    Repeat as neccessary...

One more thing...cat litter/urine can be VERY bad for a pregnant women, make sure you aren't the one cleaning the kitty box>

  4. If you have a flea infestation, you have to treat the animals as well as the premises to get rid of the fleas once and for all. Remove the kittens from the house and take them some where where they can be safely treated for fleas. Do NOT put flea collars on them. Contact the veterinarian for advice, which will depend on the age of the cats.

While you are out the basement, use flea bombs to kill the fleas that remain. Advise anybody living in the upper level, because the fumigation will affect that part of the house, too. All people and animals must be removed from the premises for several hours as per the instructions on the flea bombs.

Washing your sheets has nothing to do with it. You need to kill the fleas everywhere at one time and start new, treating the cats monthly for fleas. Otherwise, you're going to be right back where you started.

The flea treatment is part of the ownership of a cat. If you can't manage the expense, check into placing your cats in a home that can. Otherwise, fleas will always be a problem for you and your family.

  5. wash the rug, if it is big have it dry cleaned or clean it outside.  steam clean your carpets and apholstered furniture, and give your kittens flea medicine.  ask a local vet for their reccomendation.

  6. i just called the exterminator because of the same problem

    turst me call a exterminator

fleas will hurt you kittens anyway

  7. you need to be careful of toxoplasmosis. use gloves when you mess with litter and try not to let them scratch you. get the area rug out. toss it or have it professionally cleaned. wash all your sheets at once. depending on how small the kittens are, you can wash them with ivory soap which kills fleas and is safe for you and the cats but you may need to do it once or twice. and talk to a vet.

  8. I would call someone to bomb your house for fleas. Even thought you live in the basement you want to make sure the rest of the house is taken care of just incase they decide to come back and spread like wild fire.

Take the kittens to the vet and get them on flea medicine asap. The sooner you get this taken care of the better off you, the baby, and the kittens will be.

    Good luck :)

  9. wow... at first i thought u meant you were pregnant WITH kittens and fleas... like you were going to give birth to them.  HAHAHA.   i was like "wow... this person is crazy."  haha.

i honestly advise getting flea treatment or getting rid of the cats because fleas can carry a lot of diseases very dangerous for ur baby

  10. Wow. You should contact the National Enquirer. That's a miracle.

  11. Here's a link that lists information on various products that are used to get rid of fleas and other nasty little buggers:

    http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?...

    Hope this helps

Edit: I forgot to include that specific recommendations from "Flea Control" for houses with pregnant women or crawling infants are for a combination of microencapsulated

    pyrethrins and methoprene.

  12. Well, ask a veterinarian.

  13. Vaccuum  the rug, get Advantage for the cats, go see a vet. Wash the sheets and vaccum the entire area. Sweep the area. Might want to consider trashing the rug.

Dump the bag in the vaccuum as soon as you're done.

Wash your hands after you handle the kittens, same for your child.

  14. Ask your vet for Advantage provided the kittens are at least 8 weeks old.

  15. hmm..... well, you should take your kittens to the vet, and get them on some flea medication, and also have your vet or your groomer wash them in a flea shampoo of some sort.  So that they're completly flea free when you bring them home.  Then, while they're gone, you should either have an exterminator come in, or put a flea bomb in your house while you're gone.  Then, if I were you, I'd let someone else keep your cats for a couple of days (after they've been treated) while the fleas are all dying.  Then after you bring them home, keep the medication on them, and keep flea collars on them.

We used to live in the country, and one summer we were literally attacked by fleas.  We tried pretty much everything, and nothing seemed to work until the weather got a little cooler.  So I don't know... it seems like when it's really hot like it is (i'm not sure where you live) then it's especially hard to get rid of them.  But you do need to do something before you have your baby.  You don't want your newborn getting flea bitten!!!

    Good luck!!

  16. run away leave the baby and the kittens take the fleas

  17. Considering you're pregnant, I would get some flea stuff from Petco, or another animal store like that..and if it doesn't work, you need to get rid of the kittens, it's not healthy for the baby.

  18. CAUTION: This is only a suggestion, but this is what we would do under your circumstance.

We had fleas awhile back and we were also unable to use pesticides.  instead, we gave the kitten a bath and hand picked off the fleas.  To get rid of the fleas in your living space without harming you or your baby you could buy some flea bombs (Petco or Petsmart), use them on your house, but while you use them, you and your kittens should stay somewhere else.  AKA your mom's.

When you get back, wash everything to make sure it is safe.  Especially wash everything that is close to your face.  Good luck, and If you're scared about using the flea bombs, don't.  :)

  19. If the rug is too large to wash, get a carpet powder that contains flea powder, sprinkle it on the rug wait as directed and vacuum it up. Flea eggs get down in the carpet and furniture and continuously hatch out.Let somebody else do this or wear a mask until the powder is vacuumed up. Treat the kittens at the same time there are flea products for kittens.

  20. idk im not sure
