  1. I have to assume that you are a school student being made to read a book that is part of a school classroom curriculum - in that case tuff read the book!!! if you get something out of it good, if not good, but you will still have to write a book report - in your case probably like maybe 27 pages long

  2. I always thought the best bit of the story was how his son grew up via his search for his father.

I went to boarding school so was not exactly raised by my parents, and i guess i kind  of related to a lot of the stuff he was going through.  Also my Father was in the Military so was away a lot.

  3. To read the same tale that people have been enjoying for such a long time and learn the values of an ancient people that influenced the rest of the world will impact your life, imo. What I enjoy most is how easily I can imagine  the emotions of the characters, even if their situation is too fantastic to imagine.

  4. No ! - it is not a waste of time ! Both The Odyssey and The Iliad both by the Greek poet Homer are recognized as the cornerstones of Western Literature .

The time-line for the books' chronology is The Battle of Troy(The Iliad) occurs and then(The Odyssey) Odysseus' voyage home .

Helen of Troy was a Spartan woman who came from an exceptional culture that was known for not only a warrior society but the women themselves were renown for their beauty and the equality the women enjoyed for having a near equal status with the men in Greek culture .

I always recommend to those who have not yet read these works a prose(text) version before reading a verse translation because it is more easily read in prose than a verse edition . See if it is an acceptable choice to your parent-tutor .

These two books are among my perennial favorites and I have every English translation available . If you have to read both or perhaps one of the two then I would suggest The Odyssey since it is more of an adventure story than The Iliad .

Within the pages of these two books there is every human emotion , e.g. pride , anger , humor , vanity , love , etc . . .

I think that you will find the books quite interesting !

Both of these works of Western literature has changed my life in many ways , i.e. I read and reread them yearly and I always look for another translation to be done . I really hope that you like them for they are very interesting and gives you an insight to human nature . Good luck !

  5. It's not made a difference, but it's still  a good story, so It's not a waste...

  6. When I read Homers "Odyssey" It turned me on to the history of the Greeks, Romans and from there I learned to enjoy finding out more about the history of other civilizations as well.

Also, after completion of Odyssey I started reading other mythological works as well.

Its a great classic with tragedy and drama.  Writers wouldn't be where they are today without Homer's Odyssey.

  7. There are lots of referances to it in todays literature and TV shows/movies that most people don't really get unless they have read this, just like with Romeo and Juliet.

  8. I am not sure what you are talking about when you ask, "have these writings made a difference in ones life".

The classics are written master pieces, and wonderful stories of heroes, friendships sacrifices, quests, and life in general.

To be well versed in the classics is to grow intellectually, these writings enrich your life tremendously.

They are written in a manner that challenges the reader to a higher level of thinking.

They are definitively NOT a waste of time.

  9. It gave me a life long love of and interest in Greek history, art, and writing! It caused me to study because I was interested and due to my studies, I got a scholarship to college!
