Obama is probably going to begin a chain reaction of events that leads to our ultimate demise though.  I have foreseen it.  Better start going crazy and have unprotected s*x while wielding a loaded pistol and watching Fox news.

2012 has been chosen as the newest "end-of-the-world" scare date by charlatans who have books and videos to sell (and by some others who simply take pleasure in scaring others).  

I call it the Big 2012 Hoax Off.  A hoax is a lie that is intentionally kept alive just for the purpose of fooling others.

Once 2012 is over, the charlatans will have chosen another date to scare you with.

All the "predictions" that they have made so far are not even possible.

Here are a few things that are true (they put some of these into their predictions to make them sound believable).

"The Sun will cross the Galactic equator."

Yes, the Sun crosses the Galactic equator twice a year, every year.  Do you die every 6 months?  Neither do I.

"The Sun will line up with the Galactic Centre and its black hole."

No. It can't.  It does get close every year, but misses (every year, including 2012) by over 5 degrees.

"The Mayan Calendar will end on the day of the Winter solstice."

The Mayan common calendar always ends on the day before the Winter solstice.  To them, the day of the Winter Solstice was always New Years Day.

There is a day-count calendar that is a simple count of days (look up Julian Date on wikipedia and you will see a day-count calendar that our astronomers use -- it works the same way).

The day-count calendar used by the Mayan astronomers does arrive at the end of a Long Count, and it begins a new one on the day of the winter solstice, in the year we call 2012.

It is the same as our own calendar arriving at the "end" of its numbers on December 31, 1999.

"There will be lots of solar activity"

Yes, there is a maximum of solar activity.  Every 11 years.  There will be flares and sunspots and geomagnetic storms.

Every 11 years.

Do you know anyone who is over 11 years old?  Then they survived the last maximum.  Anyone over 22 years old? Two maximums.

Know anyone over 55? Wow, they survived five maximums?  How did they do it?

Nibiru or Planet X.  False (we even know the name of the guy who created the Nibiru legend -- according to him, it was not coming back before 2085).

Magnetic field reversal?  Not started yet, and it takes at least 1,000 years (maybe as much as 8,000 years).  Obviously not in time for 2012.

Giant asteroid?  All the ones big enough to cause lots of damage are tracked.  We are safe for decades (maybe even longer).

Take heed, but fear not young one for 2012 is just the revealing of the 'antichrist' or the 'man of lawlessness' at the middle of what Jews and Christians call the 7 year Tribulation. Many pagan cultures from every corner of the world (Sumerians, Babylonians, Cherokee, Hopi, Chinese I-Ching {confirmed by T.McKenna}, Mayans, Egyptians, Celts, Satanists, etc...) celebrate this evil event called "the abomination that causes desolation". Christians and Messianic Jews look forward to this as it means they will soon join their Messianic Saviour in the Millennial Kingdom of the next Age and their Heavenly Father later as "Children of Light". No worries. The only thing I would consider being scared about in 2012 is graduating highschool and leaving all my friends. No such 2012 catastrophe will take place. And the more you believe in it, the more you will make yourself miserable. Not to mention you'd sound like a huge nutcase.

I think it was President Kennedy who said that "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."  There are things that I am worried about, however as a Christian I learned about turning over those things to God as he knows what the future is.  When I hear of calamity, death and worldwide destruction from sources all I know is that only God knows when the human race will end ... and he has not given out when, only what to watch for.

So, what will happen in 2012?  Probably pretty much the same thing that happens every year :)

Nothing spectacular will happen in 2012 (unless you count the Olympics in London).

It is just a myth which mysteriously propagates (mostly because of the History Channel and YouTube)

Therefore as an end to "the world" 2012 was a wildly optimistic estimate for them!

Planet X/Nibiru does not exist. If it did we would have found it by now. We have mapped the sky in the infrared several times in the last 25 years (ncluding WMAP, IRAS etc), and it would show up. It is not there. We would have found it if it existed. So all the nonsense about the return of Nibiru/Planet X is just that – nonsense

There is no scientific evidence for the existence of Nibiru

Furthermore, at the distance it must be to hit us in a little over 4 years, it would be reflecting enough light from the sun to be detectable.

Thanx to previous answers from Brant and bikenbeer2000, we know how bright it should be by now – it would have a apparent magnitude of 7.4 – which would not be visible with the naked eye – but easily visible in a modest telescope and would have been spotted by amateur. If there was a conspiracy to keep it quiet – it would be out of the bag by now.

Ask someone where it is supposed to be, get a pair of binoculars and look for it.

The videos on YouTube that purport to have evidence are disingenuous to say the least. They put together pictures of other objects (e.g. Jupiter, comets even a dust shell around a distant red giant star) and try to scare people. There is no validity to their claims. They present NO EVIDENCE at all.

As for the predicted catastrophes – the most popular one seems to be the Pole Shift!

The sun will have a pole reversal that year – it has one every 11 years – it is not a problem.

Some people think the earths poles will shift - they do - all the time - but the do not cause catastrophies.
