I'm scared of rollercoasters and Pitbulls Should I be allowed to adopt?

I know I will most likely get injured on a roller coaster or attacked by a pitbull, but I'm still fearful of them.

does this make me mentally ill and therefore unfit to adopt?

If being afraid of child birth does make you unfit to adopt, then does that make you unfit to be a parent at all?

What about people who are scared of the dentist, shots, spiders which is nothing compared to child birth.

  1. Its interesting that you mentioned dentists  my old driving instructor was extremely  afraid of dentists, he said he would always break out in a sweat even at the mention of going to the dentists.

The survival of our species that’s rather a joke seeing as the world is already overpopulated.  And Humans are not  in any danger of dying out.  If a woman for whatever reason does not want to get pregnant or givebirth but still wants to adopt she should be able to. Hey at least she is not adding to this already overpopulated world of ours.

  2. No- we are all afraid of some things (me- spiders, pitts, those stupid outdoor trampolines so many kids get seriously injured on every year)...as long as your fear does not interfere with your day to day life, it is FINE. Your fears are also 'rational'- an irrational fear that would be a sign of trouble would be like, say, not allowing toaster ovens in your house because they can short circuit and burn the house down, so your family is not allowed to have toast. Fears like that are a little 'out there'- yours are not. I would be worried about you adopting if you DIDN"T have fear of things known to be dangerous or risky.

  3. no no it is just a fear it wouldnt prevent u from taking care of ur child

  4. "Honey, Mommy would do ANYTHING for you...except give you life.  I draw the line at bringing you into the world.  That's one personal sacrifice that even you are not worth."

(Not that the child would feel any LESS loved, though, so don't worry about it).

  5. If people don't want to have children because of mental illness in their family that seems like a good idea.

If you are afraid to give birth that is reasonable because women have died from childbirth.

But you really need to talk to someone about your problems.

  6. Nice straw man.

I agree with others who say that being afraid of childbirth is a horrible reason to adopt. Also agree that anyone who isn't willing to go through that pain is ill-equiped to be a mother.

  7. Scared of Pitbulls - is a plus.

Scared of Rollercoasters - are you afraid of having fun!!

    *snark* - sorry - I couldn't resist!!!!!

  8. My nmom is terrified of Pitbulls to the point where she thinks every dog is a Pitbull.  We were walking somewhere once and this woman had a dog on a leash and my nmom said, "Keep that Pitbull away from my grandchildren!"

The woman just looked at her funny because her dog was a lab.  No kidding!

    It was weird.

But anyway, No.  I don't think that your fear should keep you from adopting...as long as you're not wanting to adopt a Pitbull.

    That would be a problem.

  9. Pitbulls and rollercoasters aren't crucial to the survival of our species.

Procreation/reproduction/childbirth   are basic primal drives. To decide you don't want to partake in those activities SHOULD exclude one from the parenting pool.

To adopt in order to avoid a fear about childbirth belies a mental instability regarding motherhood.  If you are unwilling to endure some personal discomfort - u don't have what it takes to mother.

  10. Lol!

No sweetie, it makes you normal, you have weird hang ups like EVERYONE has!

However, the fact that your an adoptive parent does mean you'll be going straight to h**l........  :=)

  11. Having a phobia should not equate to mental illness. That only happens when you let the phobia do damage to your life or others. For example: I have a phobia of getting into a serious relationship because i fear rejection. This was based on my thinking that my birth mother rejected me. So up until now i have let that phobia rule my life. Now, i coming to terms with it. Will it make me an unfit parent? I don't think so. Because now i refuse to let it rule my life.

In closing many people have phobias but if it doesn't affect on how they treat people,it shouldn't prevent them from being parents. Oh, by the way I do fear childbirth, but I won't let it stop me from getting pregrnant or if i can't get pregrnant adopting a child.

  12. Are you doing some kind of thesis on adoption?

  13. Procreation is the basic design of all species on this planet. The world is overrun with people and mice, cats, dogs, pigeons... Get the idea? Having a fear of procreation is like having a fear of breathing or drinking water. While it may not be the most detrimental phobia out there I still say it is not a good reason to adopt.

  14. being scared of something is a phobia and not a mental illness.

  15. Being afraid does not make you unfit to adopt.  However, the original question posted on this board was is being afraid of childbirth a good reason to adopt.  In my opinion, no it is not a good reason to adopt.  Adoptions are a stressful journey.  Adoptive families should be created out of love, not fear.  Do I think fears or phobias make someone mentally ill?  No.  Do I think they should prevent people from adopting?  No.  However, if the only reason someone is choosing adoption is because they are afraid of childbirth, then I would be concerned.

    I hope that makes sense.

  16. I can't go to the dentist without breaking down in tears, but I'd like to think I'm still a good mommy.  Having a phobia doesn't make you mentally ill or a bad parent.

And I don't think fear of childbirth makes you unfit to adopt.

It's a little unorthodox of a reason to adopt, but so what?

If you're a good person who can provide a caring, stable home for a child, why should anyone care if you're afraid of childbirth?
