Question:

I'm scared of the Dentist!!!?

I get really nervous going to the dentist and I know I will have to soon. The bad part is I am not afraid to getting fillings in my teeth. It's the block that holds your mouth open that bothers me. I feel like I will choke on it. I have gone last year and had the "happy gas" and everything was fine but, I am still really scared.

What should I do to relax and not be so scared?

We all are!  It's just that we know that no matter how scary it seems, the outcome is well worth any distress we go through.  I would say that since you have identified the exact thing you are afraid of, just have a conversation with the dentist or maybe the assistant about your fear.  Explain just what you did here, and that you are afraid of choking.  I'm sure he or she can explain why it's used and that it isn't a choking hazard.  I find when I face my fear and talk about it, it does alot to make it disappear.  Now you can put on headphones, take a few deep breaths and just let the "relax" mode take over your body.  Have a little happy gas if they will let you and it will be completed before you know it.

  4. Just think of other things. If they have pictures on the ceiling, look at them, listen to music, and don't be scared. How many people do you hear choke on those things at the dentist? They wouldn't use them if they were unsafe. There are pleanty of people around you that want to help you, and won't let anything bad happen to you!  I know how you feel, though. I don't like the dentist too much either.

  5. oh, i went to get 8 fillings last month; how horrible! i didn't even get happy gas! just a few shots of novicane. trust me, you WILL NOT choke on the block. after a while, it got a quite bit annoying for me because it was tiring out my mouth/jaw muscles. when the dentist left for a few moments, i pushed it out with my tongue, and when she came back, pushed it back in with my tongue again. but don't worry. well, this may sound ridiculous but, pretend that you are the Hulk and you can take pain! pretend that tooth pain is nothing and relax. works for me! good luck!
