Question:

I'm selling a car in Colorado - do I need a new or current emissions test?

The buyer wants a new emissions test done today. I have one done in 2007 that is still current (valid for 2 years). We called the DMV and they said the current one is fine. The buyers insist we are required to furnish a brand new one and say the DMV website states clearly we need a new one. Who is correct?

What should I do if I want to sell my car to a person who lives in another state?

The process is identical to selling your car to a person living in Colorado. Basically, you'll need to do the following:

        * Sign over your title to the buyer.

        * If your car is less than 10 years old, you need to obtain an odometer disclosure.

        * Provide a current emissions certificate.

        * Provide a bill of sale. Make sure to include vital information like buyer name, the vehicle purchase price, VIN, make, model, and year, and your signature.

The emissions certificate needs to be current not new.

  2. The emissions test is good for 2 years BUT if you sell the car, the emissions test cannot be more than 12 months old.  If the emissions test you have was done before July 21st, 2007, you need to get another test.
