Currently on a desktop, connected with Virgin cable broadband. Going to buy a laptop. I assume I need to get a wireless cable router as well (and make sure the laptop has a wireless card?) and connect the wireless router to the Virgin modem (I think?) - is this right? Does the main computer need to be switched on for my laptop to have internet access? Im very confused.

  1. Connect the router to modem with ethernet cable.  Turn on your router, turn on your laptop wireless device (most of the laptop has wireless card).  Run your router setup disk, and your main (existing) computer doesn't need to be on for the new laptop to connect to internet.

  2. No the main computer doesn't need to be on.

  3. Outside cable into MODEM cable to ASDL Router. Put modem on and Route put laptop on and search for network on your laptop.

  4. You are right and no the main computer does not need to be switched on

  5. Once you have the router you will need to connect the desktop by network cable to it. Then both machines can independently use the connection.

  6. you need a wireless router, and also you need to make sure your laptop has wireless or you can buy the wireless card for it.
