  1. Yes, cut the fabric on the line shown in your picture.

  2. I sew all the time, and will tell you it's done like Kacky said. Depending on how big the pattern is, when you fold the fabric in half, you only need enough of the fabric for the pattern size. If the pattern is, say, 10" square, then you would fold the fabric to the point where you have enough for the pattern piece; you wouldn't need to fold a whole yard of fabric in half for a small pattern, or you would wind up wasting fabric.

Incidentally, you may want to join a couple of Yahoo sewing groups, two of which I can and would recommend to you - newtosewing and sewing room - URLs shown below.

  3. A center fold is where the material is folded and the edge of the pattern is pinned to the fold.  If you notice, the pattern says cut 1, not cut 2.  If you were to pin this pattern to the unfolded edge, you would get 2 pieces of fabric.  So pin the pattern to the folded edge and cut 1, do not cut along the edge that says center fold. If this is the back of the garment, you want it as one solid piece.

  4. Cut the fabric.

  5. on a pattern if it says center fold and has a line where it says it at then you fold the matterial and place that line on the fold.

    hope this helps. good luck

  6. Look at the diagram of your pattern (should be first set of instuctions)  you will notice that the piece for "center line" covers one whole section of your pattern or the main piece -- the center line combines two large pattern pieces into one without cutting (or front and back section)  -- good luck !!

  7. You know how on Valentines day, you fold a piece of paper and cut half a heart, then unfold the paper and VOILA,  you have a whole heart? That's what you are going to do.

    Fold your material in half.

Put the center fold line of the pattern on the fold of the material where you just folded it. But don't cut on that line! Cut all the other sides. This gives you half of whatever it is you are making, just like when you cut half a heart..

Then when you take away the pattern paper and unfold the material after cutting, VOILA! The whole thing, completely symmetrical.
