Question:

I'm single and interested in adopting internationally. Any advice?

I'm divorced and don't really want to be married again, although I do want to have children. Going to a sperm bank is not an option and I don't want to be involved in an "open" domestic adoption. Has anyone adopted from a foreign country, if so which one and what was your experience?

  2. Not all domestic adoptions are open, and I know that the foster system accepts single parents.  But it sounds like you are more interested in an infant.  Going international will cost more than domestic, but it's still a good option.

Every country has a different policy about who can adopt.  http://international.adoption.com/foreig... click on a country and look for the line that says "singles accepted."  Then, search for a local agency that works in one of the countries you are interested in.  Ask your friends and neighbors, shop around, and choose your agency carefully.

    I wish you the best!

  3. Hey well I'm not a parent but I'm a teenager and I was adopted from a agency of Korea. My mom said that it was a fun experience because she got to go there and get me but really the best age to do it when there a baby because you would still get to teach them stuff like how to walk, talk ,and ex. but still my parents thought it was interesting and it private.

  4. Please -- just make sure you are not choosing International Adoption because of any negative or unresolved feelings toward birth mothers!  This will be passed onto your child.

Also, be careful not to inadvertently get caught up into an adoption agency which uses unethical practices to entice poor mothers to give up their babies in order to eat, or feed their other children at home!  It happens a lot with International adoption.

Do your homework.  Join a waiting adoptive parents group through a large agency or Internet.  And make sure you have healthy, male relationships to act as role models for your child, and a good support system.

    Good luck to you!!

  5. We adopted from China.  We had a great experience, but as of May 1, 2007, China no longer accepts single parents to adopt from there.   You might want to try another country, or the USA.  A child in need is a child in need, no matter where they come from.

    Good luck.

  6. I know of several single women who have adopted from Khazakhstan (spelling?).  I don't know if they're taking singles anymore.

My advice, though, is to go to the State Department's (fed govt) website and look through the countries and their requirements.  See which countries singles can adopt from & then make your decision from there.
