The operators flare off most nights as well...what a waste of a valuable resource.Surely there are ways of harnessing this power and recycling it back into the community.

  1. yeah and guess who gets to pay for this waste of gas....yeah, you got it...its you and me.

  2. its purely economics. they dont produce enough gas for it to be worth bottling it  or piping it out so they dont bother. why they dont use it on site for heating the offices/canteen if nothing else i dont know, it's a criminal waste. why dont you ask them, i'd like to know too.

  3. you need to get out more, nettie :)

  4. It depends upon what is actually being flared off. It could be too dirty to sell, or the calorific value could be too low for it to be useful.

There is a chemical plant near us that flares off at the beginning and end of a process, as that is the best way to run the process. Its just not worth using it as there is not enough to make it worth while.

If the flaring is occurring 24/7, then it maybe worth them exploring other uses, but short of regulatory pressure, they will be looking at financial benefit before most other things. It could be worth them using it for some specific use, but remember that its use could be very limited.
