I'm a sophmore and i didn't do a school sport last year, but now, my parents want me to do a fall sport. So since my sister did volleyball, i've decided to try that out.

Now i have to go to preseason and i'm sooooooo nervous. I'VE NEVER DONE VOLLEYBALL BEFORE. and i'm afraid of embarrassing myself infront of everyone who is trying out for JV (with me) and i'll b so bad bc i won't know what to do. I know i should b out going and do this for the experience but i'm so nervous. I don't know what to do and dont know the exact "rules" of volleyball, for example, how long you can touch the ball for on a set, and wt position i should try out for since i'm only 5'. please help me

  1. Just take a deep breath. As the poster above said, ask your sister for some pointers and the main rules. Since your only 5' tall, I would suggest setting. They make all the assists to the spikers and don't have to worry about making anything over the net (unless they get tricky) So good luck! :)

  2. Just be confident. If you're not confident, you will suck.  If you believe in yourself, you will be awesome.  I had never played volleyball before tryouts, but I still made the team.  You can do that too.

    Just have confidence.

  3. well you said your sister played volleyball so see if she will give you some pointers. considering the fact that you are so short i would try and be a libero (middle back) and just work on getting your passes high and being able to control them well. I would also work on overhand serving, if u can get that down you will have a good chance of making the team.

    good luck :)

  4. just relax and take a deep breath

lots of people are just starting so don't worry

be confident!!! dont' let yourself be nervous go in there thinking that you'll give it your all

if you leave tryouts not tired than you didn't try hard enough!!!

    call the ball LOUDLY!!!!

always dive for every ball even if you know you may not get it!!

be positive and support ;your teamates

since you are short, i would suggest libero or the back row passers

these positions are realtively easy and are good for short people!!

just practice bumping against a wall again and again to get good at it!!!

remember just have fun and try your hardest, the rest will come!!

  5. I will combine some of the above answers.

Talk with the coach.  Tell the coach that you are new to the game, but you are excited about the chance to play.

Take deep breathes and relax.  What happens if you do not make the team?  Do you go to jail?  Do your parents ground you until you graduate college?  While making the team is important and would be great, it is not the end of life as you know it.

Talk to your sister.  You have a built in practice partner and teacher.  Not only can she help your game, she will help her game at the same time.  Not only does she get to practice, she will be teaching you.  It is amazing how much you learn while you are teaching someone else.

At tryouts, you need to call every ball LOUDLY.  You need to hustle on every play, even when everyone else is jogging or walking.  You need to be quiet when your coach is talking.  You need to be positive towards everyone.  Never say anything negative while you are practice.  If you have anything negative to say, wait until you get home.

  6. Even if you think you're bad at volleyball, don't worry about it. You will never be as bad as me. I either hit people in the head or butt with the ball (if it even goes over the net), I suck at serving, and if the ball comes towards me I just run away and let someone else get it.

Don't worry and try your best!

  7. Just try your best... go to the coach and tell her about how this is your first year and how you dont really understand all the rules and everything... and im sure shell help or get someone to help... but if worse comes to worse, just do soccer haha
