well firstly, i have never been on a sport team before and actually played at a game (not really a sports family, you see) and tryouts are in 2 weeks! i have wanted to play volleyball foreverrr but i've never had the opportunity. i seem to have a knack for it even though i've never played before (my dad played for 7 years, but hasn't done much athletic stuff since) and i tried last year, but i couldn't make it. it was a 5 day tryout, and it was sooo intense i quit after the first day. SOOO SORE!!

but now i want to try again. i am in better shape than last year for i have been walking and doing a small bit of running, but idk if i can do it again..please help. do you think it's posisble?? how much exercise/practice a day?? i have all day btw to do this!! if you say it is possible, i'll try, i really will. but be honest pleaseee. :] thanks!!

  1. If you want it bad enough, you have to push through "h**l week" (the first practice week of any season).  My advice, eat lots of bananas (potasium will help the muscles and prevent cramping) and pick up some muscle cream.  Once you fight through the first week it should get a whole lot better.

  2. Don't be scared. You have been training for it. You probably got sore last time because you were not training as hard. If you keep on training your body will be better in tune by tryout time. So you should not feel so sore.

Very important: Stretch before and after you exersice. This will help prevent injuries, including soreness. It will also help you to be more flexible for vollyball. Do this during the next two weeks and also during the five day tryouts.

Try to remember or find out what types of exersices you will have to do for the tryouts. Do a little every day increasing the amount and intensity every day. But not too much or too quickly.

Runing up and down stairs and skipping will help build stamina.

Two weeks huh!...hmm...When you are training and you get tired, just at that point push yourself a little bit harder, but not too much. For example, If you are running when you get really tired, then just keep running for about one more mintue. It does not seem like much but it will build up over the next two weeks. Every time you run push yourself a little more than the last time. Another e.g. if you are walking, jogging and running. You can walk for about five minutes to warm up, then walk faster for another five minutes then very fast for another five minutes. Then jogg or run for about ten minutes. When you get really tired, at the point that you would usually stop, just keep jogging or running for about 30 seconds more to make it ten munites and 30 seconds. Then the next time you train push yourself for an additional 30 secinds to make it eleven minutes in total. And every time you train keep adding on an extra 30 seconds to the last time. The times may be shorter or longer depending on how fit you  are already.

So if you are training twice a day you should improve at least seven minutes. Off course you may improve more depending on how fit you are now and how hard you push your self.

I think that you are use to training twice a day. Increase it to three times, but make sure not to over do it. You will know the next day. You have plenty time to find out.

Make sure you are eating properly. Plenty fruits and vegetables. Since you are training more than usual make sure and get plenty protien (you can get this from peas and beans, fish or meat) and also eat plenty carbohydrates (provisions e.g. potatoes). Drink plenty water.

    Get proper rest and sleep.

It is a good idea NOT to train the day before the tryouts begin. If you do train, DO NOT train very hard. Just about one quarter or one third of what you normally do.

This is because whenever you train it usually takes about 48 hours for your body to recover. So for e.g. if the tryouts begins on Friday you can train up to the Wednesday so your body will have about 48 hours of rest ( Do not skip the Wednesday just to make sure you get the 48 hours or even more). Training up until the Wednesday will be fine. So for the tryouts your body will be fully rested and stronger. Note that during the next two weeks you don't need the 48 hours of rest between training sessions. This is because your body does not need to be fully rested for the next training session. However you will need it on the day that tryouts start so rest the day before tryouts. If you do train, do only  a little bit.

Get a good night's sleep during training and during tryouts. About 8 hours per night.

Don't change much during tryouts, like eating and sleeping habits. You do not want to disrupt what your body is acustomed to, as this may cause it to react unexpectedly.

p.s. I still think you should do kickboxing.

    Good luck!

  3. Stop walking/running (thought you need it to keep in shape) and start hitting a volleyball! Get a friend who knows how to play, and bump with them. Bump= hitting the ball back and forth. Also work on jumping and serving. You could practice at your local gym, school gym, park, or tennis court. Always have a partner, it's pretty hard to practice without another person to hit the ball back to you.

  4. The fact that you are going for it shows great courage, most people would never even take the first step, and just figure they wont make it. Anything is possible, you already have the right attitude, and coaches will see that right away, that will let them know that if you are not that great right now, that you are willing to learn, and will be easy to teach, and one day could be great. Just remember, dont be nervous, if you tense up, it will probably affect your play, so stay loose, its not the end of the world if you dont make it, just means you have another road block along the way, but from the sounds of it, i think you will do better than you are expecting.  One more thing, there was a skinny little sophmore in high school that got cut from his jv basketball team when he was 16, he was crushed, but it didnt stop him, he worked even harder from there on out and actually became a pretty decent ball player........his name was Michael Jordan, maybe you have heard of him!   Good luck and dont let anyone or anything get in the way of what you want to do in life, its all in your hands!

  5. Make sure that you eat right lots of raw vegetables and fruit.

Salads with spinach, strawberries, bananas etc. a variety of fruits and vegetables. Ones that like.

Try not to eat a lot of Junk food.

Walking is good, but you may need a more rigorous routine. Check with your Dr first to make sure that you are up to it, then if you can check with some of the current players or coach and see what thier daily exercise routine is. Then try it. Start slowly and don't get angry at yourself if you can't do everthing right away. You can work your way up to it. Have a good spirit and keep trying.

  6. I believe u can do it. If this is what u really want go for it & don't give up till u make it. I wish u the best of luck. I know u can do it.

  7. go for it! i was scared for my tryouts, and they were, like 2 weeks long (now THAT was sore!!!) but i did it and made the team! i think that running like 3 miles every week (that's what i did!) would help you a lot. i helped me stay in shape until the tryouts (not saying that im not now lol!) so yea i totally think it sounds like you are good @ it and really want to play. Go try!

    Hope this helped!

  8. it dosen't hurt to tryout

  9. Well, first start to do some jogging and some light lifting in order to help build up your endurance.  Just stretch and start out slow.

  10. The best piece of advise is to touch a ball as much as possible. Set to your self, bump, hit the ball against the wall. Keep running it will only help you.

This time do not quit it will only make you regret your decision after wards, you are going to be sore that is given. I have been playing volleyball for so many years I am out of fingers to count on, and every year no matter how much I work out and run I ALWAYS seem to come out sore the next day you can not prepare for someone else's plans.

If you are dedicated to your decision about wanting to play volleyball I say go for what can you lose except 5 days of tryouts? While you are there try your best use your talents and out play everyone there!

    Lots of LUCK!

  11. I just want to add one thing to the above answers.  You should GO FOR IT.  Twenty years from now, you do not want to be thinking about the tryouts that you did not even go to.  It is always better to try and fail than sit around the house and think about trying out.  You have to live life and not just think about living life.
