What do I look for when I'm hungry? Do they have something like Denneys or Subway? People tell me everything is expensive so I'm prepared but I don't want to spend all my cash on food and I don't want to fall into the tourist traps that catch so-called rich Americans. Any good but not touristy pubs near St. Pauls or Buck Palace?

  1. Expensive is relative to how much you have to spend.

Being that London is metropolitan, you will find a wide range of options and prices. There may be some touristy rip-off places there, but you'll find those everywhere in the world that you visit. Generally, they don't target "rich Americans" because everyones money has value and scammers don't care who they rip-off.

When traveling internationally, try to eat some of the local cuisine. While "foreign" foods might be a little odd to your palate, eating where the natives eat will be the least expensive and most educational. Besides, if you're only going to do things and eat things that you would do at home, what is the point of traveling?

During our one trip to London several years ago, a traveling companion had a medical emergency and we spent the last 12-hours of our trip at a hospital. Only after we were back on our plane heading home did I realize that I hadn't had Fish & Chips.

    Have fun!

  2. London is very strong on ethnic food - Indian in particular, and this can be quite cheap.  Perhaps the best bargain of all is Diwana Bhel Poori in Drummond Street, near Euston, where it is hard to spend £10.  I have been eating here regularly for 24 years.

For details and further ideas see my website below. There is a "value for money" report option, and an index on "average price" for a 3 course meal including a drink.

  3. Best to stay away from places like Subway. Best bet it to go into Marks and Spencers and get a good sandwich and drink on the go. Wagamamas by Covent Garden has good food at good prices.

  4. There's loads to eat in London!

The most convenient option would be food halls which can be found in most department stores, which sell prepackaged, ready-to-eat items which are relatively inexpensive. Marks & Spencer, Pret a Manger..

However, you will not find food hard to come by, there are loads and loads of places to eat, of just about any cuisine imaginable!

Pls don't have Subway or McDonalds! There is a huge variety of food available at comparable prices!

ps. If you find yourself in Selfridges, do look for their salt beef sandwich. It's a bit pricey, but well worth it. The very first thing I look for when I'm in London. Yummm...
