Question:

I'm spraying paint on my house and there are three high up yellow jacket nests. What should I do?

My son was able to spray one and knock it down. Then he didn't want to be on a ladder and spray the second one because it would be hard to escape. So I hit it with an eight foot stick while low down on the ladder and one wasp stung my son. We waited until it was dark so the wasps would be resting, but we couldn't see any of them.

I now have two nests left to get rid of, else the wasps will be spray painted. I'm afraid I'll get stung. Any advice?

  1. When you have wasp and possibly bees around where you live, you probably have to deal with this every year.  Therefor I suggest to buy a BEE HAT VEIL or make one yourself. And buy a pair of gloves the thicker type that you use in construction work. Dress in  a  long sleeve  jacket and close the trousers of your long pant with a piece of rope. [It prevents a fallen wasp or bee to creep into your pants [ :-( ]

Now you are fully protected. tell everybody to stay away even your dog when you have one.

People with known systemic allergic reactions to bee or wasp stings should consult with their physician to obtain an Epi-PenTM or Ana-Guard Sting KitTM to carry with them at all times.

    Possibilities to eradicate the nest.

1]Take at night a scraper and scrape of the nest. This is quick and scary. You are rounded with a lot of angry animals with one mindset ATTACK

2] At night cover the nest with a heavy plastic bag. and seal and shut it.  put the bag in the freezer for 2 days or put in the plain sun. Both methods will kill the animals inside.

3] same as 2 but tape the bag to the building. make a small opening and blow a ready-to-use aerosol "wasp and hornet spray" into the small opening. put a tape on the opening and look the next day.If live wasps are still observed, repeat the treatment at three-day intervals until they are all dead[Aerosol insecticides usually do not work very well against hidden nests. The best method is to apply a small amount of insecticidal dust. Dusts are less commonly available in stores than aerosols] Always read pesticide labels carefully before buying and again before using! And always wash your hands and any other part of your body that came in contact with these chemicals. You never know how your body will react!

without the use of the protection that I strongly advice when "playing with flying objects that can sting"]

4] make a "lasso" from a piece of thin wire with a long rope attached to the part that pulls  the lasso.  bring with a long stick the lasso around the nest  and then pull te rope so the nest will fall on the gound. then run for your life.

5]a piece of wood with long s***w that stick out on the other side  connect a long rope to the wood  push the wood with a long stick in the nest  pull on the rope so it destroys the nest

have your running skills in order. and also here no spectators not even the dog and all the windows closed.

The most challenging nests to control are those that are concealed in voids behind walls or in attics. Often, the only evidence of the nest is wasps flying back and forth through a crack or hole in the home. But I have the impression that they are high up outside small, exposed nests.

    good luck

  2. Climb up on the ladder and spray the nest with brake cleaner for vehicles.  Put a decent amount.  Once the nest is covered, get off of the ladder and watch.  After about 10 minutes I can almost guarantee they are all dead.

  3. if you don't have a ladder to reach them, then get a can of RAID wasp/yellow jacket killer with the long squirt to get them. then spray the remnants out with a high pressure water to break up the nest.

    good luck!
