Question:

I'm starting a new school who's not familiar with the GI Bill?

How do I go about getting my benefits? Who can I call? I've been to two previous schools, and the administration did all the work for me. This new school that I'm attending has no experience with the GI Bill, so they said I'm basically their Guinea pig. If anyone has any experience with contacting the VA themselves, please help me.

  1. the obvious first step would be to contact your local VA office.  you'll have to push this as they are infamous bureaucrats.  good luck.

  2. Typically schools have a VA representative who shares an office with the financial aid folks.  If your school doesn't have any experience dealing with the GI Bill, I'd be a little concerned.

  3. If this is the case they are probably not an accredited institution and you should find a real school to go to.  You need to call the VA to discuss your benefits and ask them about this school.  If it isn't accredited, they will not pay you to go there.  Go to www.va.gov and get the 800 number to call them.

  4. Try here. VA GI Bill

  5. Contacting the VA is generally a lost cause. They usually do not know what they are doing and their customer service is terrible. I would suggest checking out Military.com. I have found them to be very helpful with their FAQ's.

Remember that the new Post-9-11 bill just came out. I'd do some research, again on Military.com, to see if you might want to start using that. It covers housing, fees, and a few other things.
