This year, I'm starting dance classes, and I'm 14, a 9th grader. I was thinking about maybe building a career around dancing, because I really enjoy it, but do you think I would have had enough dancing experience?

And another question is how can I convince my mom to put me in lyrical/contemporary classes at a different studio, because where I take, they only offer Teen Dance II (pom/jazz)?

  1. It depends if you are really, really passionate about it and if you have talent and if you always give it your all. I know dancers who started as young as 2 or 3, but they didn't have much passion or talent for dance so they stayed at just an okay level. Then there are dancers who start from about 13 to 16 who love dance and always try their hardest and then succeed. So it all depends on what kind of dancer you are.

  2. totally! i'm 13 (going into 8th) & have been dancing since 5th grade. if you work hard enough, you can totally build your career around it. i've only been dancing for 3 years, but i'm already in the advanced high school level (9-12) grade & am a really advanced dancer, according to my teachers. if you work hard enough, you'll get there.

do a bunch of chores & stuff around the house that you wouldn't normally do, and calmly & politely ask her if you can switch. if she says no, DO NOT blow up at her. just take it one step at a time.

  3. The amount of experience to build talent greatly depends and varies on the person and whether the studio is good or not.  I have seen mindblowing contemporary who have only danced for 2 years, and I am baffled.

And yeah, you definitely should go to a different studio for variety.  You should tell her what you told us -- that you are considering a career around this and in order to better your skill it's important to have more than pom/jazz, especially ballet, the basic.

  4. hi! I'm in 9th grade too..I started dancing in 7th grade and i also hope to build a career around it..People tell me i can do whatever i want to do as long as i put an effort into it and have the passion for it and that is what i can say for you. If you really love this as i do then just keep up with it. As for your 2 different dance studio dilemma...If your mom doesn't like the idea of going to 2 different studios then maybe you should find a studio that offers everything you want to do. Good luck!!
