  1. not a answer because it has been covered, but in what area/city/state are you located, there may be local fencers in your area that could help and even teach the basics.

  2. Protective gear will likely be worn over whatever you have on.

Go in comfortable clothes that do not bind your movements.

Light weight would be best, because you are going to work up a sweat.

    Cool sport! - Have fun.

Hope you stick with it - pardon the pun

  3. Sherry's pretty much got it.

More than likely, your local club should provide you all the equipment you need as a beginner. When you get into competitive fencing however, you might consider buying your own equipment.

    To sum it up:

    -Mask

    -Jacket

    -Knickers(breeches)

    -Fencing glove

    -comfortable shoes

    -knee high socks

And yes when you're at the club practicing and a beginner warmup pants, comfortable athletic shoes (not running/basketball shoes) and your will should suffice.

  4. Hi, It's great to know that you are starting one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. Fencing is for everyone regardless of ability, age or gender! With its emphasis on sportsmanship, strategy, cardio-pumping excitement, and the need for core stability, it is the ultimate workout-a combination of sport, martial art, and physical chess!

You should wear comfortable sweats (not shorts), tennis shoes, and long hair should also be put back. Some clubs may provide all the equipment a student will need to fence, but it is important to wait until they tell you what you might buy. Do not buy anything before talking to your instructor!

Fencers (beginning with the foil, the most common starter weapon (there are two other weapons- epee, and saber) wear a chest shield (required for women), plastron (protective vest), jacket, mask, glove, and may use an electric vest called a lame (LA-MAY) for electric fencing later on. These are worn over your clothes. Knickers (those white pants that end at the knee) are only needed for USFA  (United States Fencing Association) sanctioned tournaments. Some clubs will buy or provide discounts for students to purchase 'beginner's sets' or other fencing items. Most classes will at least provide the gloves and foils, as these are all a student needs in the beginning as they learn how to hold the foil, stand in the en guard position, and move up and down the fencing strip.

Like any other sport, the more you put into fencing, the more you get out of it. Some beginning fencers mistakenly think they will be swordfighting ala Pirates of the Caribbean on their first day. However, watching experienced fencers for the first time shows up close the speed, mental agility and skill involved. Whether for recreation or competition, fencing is fun!
