  1. I Suggest you Nikon D60 or you can buy Canon 450D (not mention on your list). D40x is a great camera but you will need a AFS lens (or HSM in Sigma lens) because he doesn't have a motor in his body so not all of Nikkor lenses will suitable for this Camera (meanwhile AFS lenses are tend to be more expensive).

  2. I wouldn't have the slightest idea which camera is best for you, I don't know you.  They are all good cameras.  Pick one.

Better yet, wait until the nikon D90 comes out, and buy that one.

  3. all are fantastic cameras for a budding photog.

I prefer canon but that is only MY choice.

The one you should choose is....

    1. The one that feels comfortable in your hands.

    2. The one you will learn to use.

    3. The one that has the lens system you will buy into. You can not interchange lenses between brands.... and often between models in the same brand.

    4. The one that is most functional for you. they all have slightly different features and functions so choose what you will use most.

remember.... megapixels dont matter but with modern dslrs you want at least 6 and preferably 10. image sensor size is much more important.

  4. I vote for the Canon 400D or even better the Canon 40D.  The 40D (one Zero) has more professional features that you will be able to 'grow' into

    Good luck!

  5. The D60 is a great entry level DSLR. It will let you have control over your shots to go with your skill level. Everything from a flexible program mode where the camera does many of the functions to a full manual mode where you set everything as you want it. It give good quality pictures. The D60 give you a number of things you want. It has newer firmware and image processors, designed for the 10 mp sensor. It has an "Active Dust Reduction System with Airflow Control ". Nikon not putting a system on the D40 to deal with dust is one of the biggest drawbacks I see to the D40 ( though I think its still a great camera for the money) If you change lenses dust will get in and the camera needs a system to deal with it. With the D60 you get a VR lens. That will help with low light situations ( they may offer that now with the D40 but originally it was not) . The D60 has Adaptive Dynamic Range. Nikon calls it "Active D-Lighting," it lets you save some highlights that my otherwise be lost. It has a newer better metering system than the D40.

It is a small camera as DSLR go and some people with larger hands do not like that so go and get one in your hands and play with the controls to see how it feels

  6. nikon is better than cannon so any nikon would be good. i would get one of the two you listed above or the new one when it comes out. the d60 is the newest so far. the d40 and d40x are both good but if you wait for the new one it will take pictures faster and may be better. all nikons are good. i have the nikon d40 and look how the pictures turn out.

  7. Can't say which one is best for you... you'll need to try them out to see for yourself.

BTW, I LOVE my Canon 400D!

  8. I think the nikon D40x is a great starter.

  9. These cameras are pretty evenly matched. Same resolution, same anti-dust, same two and a half inch screen. However, when you think of it, the Canon 400d/Nikon d40x are getting pretty old, they came out in 2006, which was almost three years ago. I think you should get the d60, because it's newer, and has more features built into it as technology progressed, like the info changing when you flip it vertically to take a vertical shot. This camera is just newer, more hip, and more exciting.

However, these cameras are almost identical ( especially the d40x and the d60 ) however, if you like Canon, or favor that system, you should get the XTI, i expect the images to look exactly the same. Whichever one you get, you'll get very good, high-res images. Personally, i would get the d60. The choice is up to you, they are evenly matched, so it's now just which one you LIKE more in appearance, and feature ( which is almost the same anyway )

  10. I was also in the same shoe and I had gone through many reviews & expert comments, usability etc.

I felt Canon 450D is better technically compared to D60 & 400D with 3 inch LCD, Live view option, DIGI III and many more...

Your budget also makes an important aspect.

    I am happy with 450D.
