I'm in the and got stationed in South Korea. I want to get a pet rat but none of the pet stores have any rats. I was wondering if rats could be sent over here and have a chance of surviving the trip.

  1. Hmm tough call here.  Rats can get quite stressed out and could potentially end up with a myco flair up that would need vet attention.  Do you have an exotics vet there already picked out?  If not, do put off thinking of getting a pair (never ever get a solo rat, they do FAR better in pairs or greater).

Pet store rats are notorious for their bad genetics and poor care of their small animals.  Although some stores are better than others, none are true rat breeders.  Breeders will be able to give you rats that have been bred for their health and temperament.  You don't want to support mill breeding with rats.  Take a look at what state would be the shortest air travel then contact the airline and ask if they even transport rats.  Once you have the estimate of the cost to ship as well as their own policies (is the cargo temperature regulated, will you need to pay overnight fees somewhere, will someone check on them for fresh water or food? etc).  Once you have that info, google local ratteries around the airport.  Some might be willing to transport.

Transporting rats really is stressful and not recommended.  I wouldn't put a rat on a plane for more than a couple of hours, but some have been known to do fine on a plane trip across the US.  I would be hesitant to place rats on a trip that lasts for more than a few hours.  As I stated before, it's a stressful situation for them and can lead to issues.

Can you wait until you are home again?  You could come back to the states and get two from a breeder around where you live and have them next to you on the trip back... if that's possible which I'm fairly certain it's not.  Otherwise I really would wait until you are home for good.
