  1. First of all define what it is you will use it for. If it is just for surfing the Internet and typing up your course work then any laptop will do. If you need to run specific software for your course than you should be given a minimum specification to buy.

  2. A Macbook

I'm guessing if your studying architecture you'll be wanting to do a lot of designs on it, so a Macbook is a definate good buy. Macbook Pro's are too pricey. Could set you back a grand if you want one. But a regular Macbook starts from £650.

  3. Find out if you will be required to use any CAD programs first!!! I cannot emphasize that enough.

CAD programs require a lot of RAM and power to run properly, and can be fussy about graphics cards.  If you are going to render projects, you will need even more juice.

General recommendations if you are running any of the AutoCAD products (AutoCAD, Revit, AutoCAD Architecture, 3DS Max, or Maya): dual processors, at least the recommended amount of RAM (but more is much better), certified graphics card (see the bottom of the links below).  Dual monitors at your desk would be good too.  Macs can run most Autodesk products using Bootcamp or Parallels, but it can be klugey, and, in Architecture school, you won't have any time to deal with stuff like that (they did warn you that you won't even have time to sleep, didn't they?).  Maya also runs on OS X, but the others are all Windows-only, so you will most likely have an easier time if you buy a Windows-based laptop.

    Good luck!

  4. Find out if the Uni will automatically be renting one out to you. I heard that at my college for certain courses they will only rent because of certain programs. Try talking to the college/professor.

  5. Anything will do - don't spend a fortune.  As long as you've got the Microsoft Office suite (or Open Office, which is free) and internet access, that should do you.

  6. you should get a macbook pro and some software called bootcamp then use bootcamp to put windows xp and your mac os
