  1. What they'll be looking for is the following:

          - continuity (are you sticking to the topic?)

         - subject-verb agreement (make sure they agree in person, number, and gender and don't let prepositional phrases confuse you)

          - is your vocabulary age-appropriate?  (Prepare yourself with some good words.  You'll find a place to use them!)

          - Did you paragraph correctly?

          - Did you avoid sentence fragments and run-ons?

Watch your mechanics; use capitalization and  punctuation correctly.      Avoid the generic "you"  (Instead of:  You should always cross the street at a light.  Use: The safest place to cross the street is at a light.)

The most important thing you can do is:

(Here it comes.  You've heard it a million times.)  EDIT, EDIT, EDIT!     Read it over, then read it over again!

Breathe, relax, and just be careful.

  2. Make sure you actually write about the prompt.  It sounds like common sense, but you'd be amazed how many people go off on a tangent and end up writing an essay that is completely off topic.  Make sure you have a clear beginning, middle, and end.  It might help to do a quick outline to organize your thoughts before you begin writing your essay.  Always go back and proofread your essay when you're done.  It's very easy to mis-spell words, skip words, etc.
