OOOH!  See if you can't find an old powder-blue polyester tux with a matching ruffled shirt!  It would bring back some fun memories for anyone who went to prom in the 70s!

Just go down to the fancy dress store and talk to them...they should have some great ideas. I think its great what you are doing for your girlfriend.
