I'm taking my son to London for his 6th Birthday?

How much money do you'll think i need to give him a good weekend & let him see the sights.

I've already bought the hotel, train tickets & theatre tickets.

London is an expensive city so make sure you have enough money depending on how much sight seeings you want to do.

That all depends on how much your willing to spend and how much you got what exactly was you planing to do with him

/ where to go etc,  as museum are free, and other things are priced as varied,  for the whole week end   £ 50-75 would be considered cheap

£300 for the pair of you would be more than enough.

A boat trip on the Thames,  The Tower of London maybe, Hamleys Toyshop in Regents Street, the London Eye perhaps (but go early), London Zoo in Regents Park or a paddle boat on the Serpentine in Hyde Park.

Less is more so maybe do 3 of the above and have a great weekend.

A day off in London for me would mean only one thing - museums. Trouble is I would need at least a weekend just for the top 3.

there are LOADS of things you can do for free, just type in 'free things to do in london' into a search engine. check out the Science Museum, its interactive and i'm sure your 6 yr old would love it. also if travelling by train from some places you get 2 for 1 entry into alot of attractions, check the train service website, or ask at the ticket office. You can see lots of sights for free. The main thing is to get a balance between sightseeing and racing about to let out all that 6 year old energy. Remember that what will give him the best weekend isn't necessarily spending loads of money but spending time with you and having lots of little adventures together.

Get a map and get onto the tourist websites, and plan your weekend in advance so you'll know just what you will spend and where you're going. Get a tourist Oyster cad or buss pass so you can get around cheaper. The Transport for London site will even help you work out and print off your bus and train routes in advance.

You can make things cheaper by finding a supermarket or shop that does sandwiches and drinks and socking up each day before you set out. Buying your own packed lunch usually works out a lot cheaper than stopping into a cafe.

For sightseeing, the Natural History Museum is great but he may be a bit young to really get into seeing all the buildings and monuments. Take an open-top bus tour and you can deal with all that in a way he'll enjoy. The one thing I would suggest is taking him to Trafalgar Square and taking his photo sitting on one of Nelson's lions - I've never met a child who doesn't enjoy that, unless they're really scared of heights.

If he loves trains, take him for a ride on the DLR from Tower Gateway to Beckton and back. The rail is raised for most of its length and there are lots of interesting buildings, docks and an airport along the way. If it's a nice day he might like to get off at Royal Albert where you can go down to the dockside and watch the planes for as long as you like. If you take the other branch and get off at the Thames Barrier Park, there is a fountain piazza where splashing in the 32 random jets is a lot of fun on a hot day, providing you remember a towel and a swimsuit!

If you think he would enjoy playing with animals, London has about ten City Farms with cafes and shops, some with riding or aerial walkways. They're all free to enter and see the animals though they mostly charge for extras like riding. London's parks also have free talks, concerts and activities. In kensington Gardens he can play in a pirate ship and tepee village in the Princess Diana Memorial playground.

all depends on what you have planned, why dont you see if there are any shows or things like that on the weekend you are taking him.  it is expensive in london mind and make sure you keep hold of his hand tight as its very busy city.

You'll have a great time here in London and it need not cost that much either.

I recommend the Natural History Museum - your son will love it - lots of dinosaurs - the main attraction I think these days.

In addition, take your son out on a River Boat Trip on the Thames.  You can do this from Wesminster Pier or Charing Cross Pier right in the heart of London.

You do not say when you will be in London - however, if you are in London on 14th June, Saturday, I strongly recommend you see Trooping the Colour (Queen's official birthday parade).  You'll need to stand somewhere along the Mall which runs from Buskingham Palace towards Horseguards.  This next link should help : -

the girlthemyth is right. We were there for a few hours and my 6 year old son wanted to go on the eye, unfortunately we didn't have time beause we spent all day cueing to go in the dungeons for my daughter.

edit: I wouldn't've gone to the dungeons, I would've prefered the galleries and museums.

like the others have said, lots of attractions in london are free..i think he'll have lots of fun in Hamley's though! wonderful toy store....might have to bring some extra cash for that. :)

All the museums are free  perhaps take him to the science museum where children/adults of all ages can interact. Perhaps take some sandwiches into the park for lnch if its nice - theres lots to see in the parks.

It depends on what you have planned but there are loads you can do for free. Like have a picnic in Hyde Park or go Convent Garden and Trafalger Square. Also go the science musuem its free and really interesting with loads of cool exibitions. If you like art go to the Tate Museum too.

Just wander around and let him look. You can spend as much or as little as you like. Go on the eye, he will like that and buy him an ice cream and wander around the west end and Chinatown. You dont need money except for food.
