I'm terribly afraid of big trucks on the highway. What can this be a sign of?

I am afraid of being next to a truck on the expressway when riding in the car (especially when they switch lanes). I start breathing hard, get sweaty plams and crying. I am so afraid that I hate getting on the expressway. By, the way I'm 21 years old and don't drive. My sister says something must have happened during my childhood to make me so fearful. I don't know what it is. Please help. Thanks!

  1. It's a sign that you are afraid of big trucks on the highway.

There are lots of people who are afraid of big trucks on the highway.  Because they are bigger than the vehicle we drive.

Squish, if one were to hit us.

  2. Maybe you saw the Steven Speilberg film "Duel" featuring Dennis Weaver as a car driver being chased by a truck.

  3. Maybe you've seen something, an accident or something, that scared you. A family member might of died in some kind of accident or something. There was a commercial a couple months back of a trucks tire blowing off and the car behind it spinning off. It could have been something you saw like that.

If you really need help I would suggest therapy.

  4. Honey, this is a panic attack you should get some medication from your doctor.  Good luck!

  5. It sounds like a anxiety or panic attack. I use to be afraid of big trucks too. My fear was the result of an accident I was involved in when I was 18 with a semi-truck.  With time and experience driving on the expressway, I eventually overcame the fear. Of course, I am still cautious of them and make sure they see me at all times.

I think it may not be as bad for you if you started driving.  A lot of people have anxiety or panic when they are not in control of situations.

  6. Sweetheart, apprehension is no bad thing in this world: you are only being sensible, keeping an eye open for hazards when you venture out. Sure, your reaction to massive vehicles might be overdone, but don't listen to the drama students assigning some psycho-ism to it.

BTW, I get about in a Honda scooter, feeling vulnerable indeed in heavy traffic, but have yet to have an incident involving other vehicles- (OK, I dropped it twice at low speed, just being clumsy)

So, you are limited in age and driving experience: get out more, if only a bicycle (then a scooter). If you are adequately mobilized with others at the wheel, so much the better- you will save heaps of cash on car insurance, purchase and upkeep. Be content.

  7. Kind of like claustrophobia, but you may just be watching too many movies...

  8. sounds like you rode with me one time too many
