t is? I think i just get scared cause you're in the air and you have no control on what happens. And I don't like being in a situation that risks my life. Reading and watching movies doesn't help me.

  1. Just like many other people above me have said, air travel really is a very, very safe form of travel. Perhaps, the safest! I realize that your form of fear is that you have no control. Think about it this way, in what other forms of transportation do you not have control of? Trains, buses, when others are driving cars? You're not terrified of them are you? Also, again, like everyone said, fall asleep. Even a long-haul flight will seem like it's over really fast. Personally, I love flying! Think about it as going somewhere new and exciting, and the airplane just as the thing that takes you there. Also, I know a lot of people who are scared just like you, and some of them have been to flying programs at large airports. On these, experienced pilots talk to them about everything, and then they go on a short flight to help with nerves. You know, one of my best friends did this, and she LOVED it! She ended up getting over her fears and only about a month later, flew to Australia for a 2 week trip! So, if I were you, I'd learn all about flying. It's very true that's it's the unknown that scares us. The more you know about it, the less likely you're to be scared. Anyway, I wish you the best, and I hope that someday you'll be ready to take that flight. Good luck and god bless!

  2. There are much more car accidents that happen than plane accidents

  3. Close your eyes in the car ride over to the airport.

Notice how bumpy and 'fast and slow' it is.

Next time you're airborne and at altitude, close your eyes.

Notice how smooth your ride will be in comparison.

  4. It is fun. I use to be afraid before I flew the first time. It is so steady your drinks don't even move. You can close the window cover if that helps. Much faster then days in a car.

  5. go to sleep or do something that will take ur mind off the fact that u r high in the air

  6. Same here, You need to take small steps first. I reccomend u dont go on a long flight, its going to be hellish. First, see what meds work for you, then psyche yourself into it thinking "wow this is fun" or something. Deep breathing helps, and so does visualization. Think about flying before you actually try. It may start out bumpy, but the turbulence will fade ;)

    Good Luck

  7. It's safe. Get some tranq's from the doctor if it's that bad.

  8. ****I've been flying since I was 5 years old and that's almost 60 years ago.  I fly several times a year and have never encountered a situation which scared me.

I do sympathize w/you, though.  One thing I do when I fly is sit next to a window and put my pillow against the fuselage and sleep.  I find that the drone of the engines can be soothing and help me sleep.  I agree w/you about books and movies ~ sleeping takes your mind off of everything . . . . even your talkative seat partner!

If you think about the 1000's of people in the air at the same time you are, and that they all have their lives in a professionals hands, it may comfort you.

My son is an Air Traffic Controller in CA and had to go through rigorous training in order to qualify.  Pilots do, too.  They aren't even qualified until they have a certain number of hours!

Rest assured that your life is in professionals hands and they don't want anything to happen to you, because the same would happen to them.

Enjoy yourself and relax!  It will be over before you know it!

  9. well go on roller coaster rides as many times as possible until you feel it's really nothing.

  10. It's safer than a car or walking down the street......

try taking some flight lessons it was fun and it worked on me.

  11. I'm not going to tell you that it's completely safe...and that nothing bad is going to happen. You just never know. What I will tell you that what you must be flying for, is probably worth doing it for. Odds are that nothing bad will happen..and that you will have a wonderful memory. As for the fear part..hurry up, make reservations, pack your bags, get to the airport. Don't think about anything. Keep yourself busy with arrangements and so forth. When it's time to board the plane..take deep breaths...think positive..think about what or who you are flying to. You might want to ask your doctor to prescribe some medication..to help with nausea, nerves, sleep..and ear popping before you go. LOL. I make it sound easy..and that's because it IS. It's all a matter of the mind. Who's the boss...life of which you never know...or YOU that can deal with life's curves? What's the worse that can happen..a crash? Well, I have to tell you that if that's the worse that can happen...then have no fear..unless you are terrified of trains, cars..go karts and so forth. Just do this..get it over with. You can't control life. You CAN control how you deal with it.

  12. Well... think about this then, if you think lack of control is your issue.

Let's say you are riding with someone in his/her car.  You sense, the danger is coming.  Now, realize, you only have seconds to react.  What are you really going to do?  What can you possibly do to save yourself?  Do you really have THAT much control?  No, really....

It's a perception of control that gives you comfort, not the control itself.

Take an aircraft.  It's true that if something bad happens, there isn't really anything you can do.  But... the air-crafts are maintained and inspected before and after every flight.  The guy flying it has his life at stake, too.  He is also very well trained and certified.  The probability of hitting something is almost none, except for few minutes during landing and take off.  If an engine quits, (which rarely happens), he has 3 spares.  Two of them will keep it flying safely.  Even with none, it has miles to glide to safe landing.

Logically, it is very safe.  It's your perception that's scaring you.

  13. I know a lot of people who are scared of flying. the hardest part is just the landing. If you don't look out the window its not as bad, but just think like your on a train. And while your flying try to sleep because when you wake up its already half way over.

  14. just remember that that millions of flights go on a day and that your more likely to get hurt in a car crash than in an airplane

try bringing an ipod or a portable dvd player

falling asleep is the best cause when you wake up its all over

  15. It truly is the safest form of travel.  Think about how many thousands of flights depart and arrive in the airport closest to you each day.  Now think about how many thousands of flights depart and arrive in each airport across the entire world each day.  Now...think about how many times you've heard about plane crashes.  Seriously...it's fun and exciting!  Expand your horizons!  Good luck!
