Ok, so i've been thinking about barrel raing but I don't know where to begin, or how much work it actually takes. We don't own any horses or anything but I love to ride and i thought I would enjoy this. I have some money saved up to buy a hourse but yea... HELP!?!?!

Oh, and does anyone know where i could find somthing about the injury rate?

  2. I'll be honest....without the right care you will run your horse right out of his legs....I bought my mare navicular because her previous owners ran her WAY TOO MUCH....and a lot of people will because a lot of people dont know what the heck their doing.

barrel racing is fun, but just like any other sport....it's dangerous.....my friend was barrel racing her horse and the horse slipped and fell ON HER...and the horse's leg was broken so it couldnt get up so they had to get a helicopter to come and get the horse off of her.

train your horse the basics first. DO NOT start on barrels until your horse can split rein, neck rein, and respond to leg pressure really really good. And once you do start your horse on barrels....you cant just run run run when their first learning.....you gotta go through the pattern at a walk and once you and your horse have mastered that (it should take about a week through 2 weeks), you can move onto the trot and then slowly up to the lope and then slowly up to the gallop

I've seen horses GO CRAZY because their owners and trainers started them WAY too fast on barrels......take it nice and slow and give your horse a vacation every once in awhile

    good luck and have fun

EDIT- EMAIL ME AND ASK ALL THE QUESTIONS YOU WANT!!!!

  3. your biggest mistake is to get an expirenced barrel horse while you are new, you will confuse him, and not to mention they are ALOT of horse....they are all "almost" hyper. With the exception of a few good solid minded horses, but for you they will be to hard for you to run, the best thing to do it get a horse started on barrels, with good bloodlines and learn with him/her. It is the best for both of you and your new horse. It is alot of work and its alot harder than it looks. good luck
