Question:

I'm thinking about becoming a vegetarian?

However, I still own some leather items eg. a couple of belts. But I swear that once I become vegetarian (hopefully once I turn 18, which is in just two weeks), I will not buy any MORE leather (or for that matter, other animal meat and most products).

Is it bad for a vegetarian / vegan to keep their non-vegan items from before when they weren't veg? It would be a waste to simply throw it out. Of course I could buy new non-leather belts but I'd rather not; I already have all the belts I need (and I'm kinda broke anyway).

  1. I would say you just keep them. It would be a waste if you just threw them away.

  2. just use them.

You might, however, attract questions from people trying to pick at your choices as they will wonder why you have leather products.

  3. Morally is not absolute...there is no rules to being a vegetarian, it is not like you go to a committee to become a certified vegetarian...eg some people don't eat icecream (which contains gelatin...an animal product) while others do. Some people refuse to eat food cook in the same pan as meat products (though my friend orders vegetarian deep fried food cooked in the same oil as meat products).

Being a veggie is a moral choice, you have to decide for yourself. I mean, if you are keeping your leather shoes, well you are not hurting any more animals if you keep them....so you are doing no harm. Maybe to commit to being veggie you want to get of them, but morally it is easily defendable.

Basically think about it, if you don't become vegeterain but cut down on your meat consumption you will be doing good because you are eating less animals and have a smaller environmental impact.

This is often a better way to start because the normal western diet contains too much meat but not enough of the right vegetables to just cut out the meat. So it can be healthier to ease yourself into being a vegetarian.

Personally I avoid too much meat, often eating meat only say once ever 2 weeks, and this started from meat in every meal, to one vegetarian meal a week, to 2....then mostly vegetarian....

  4. it is a bad idea..it may impress others but discourages your health....i think u must continue having nonveg foods...it is infact a horrible idea to give up non veg....i am sorry if i have disappointed u.....................

  5. I say go for it!

  6. Rather than throwing them out (if you feel guilty about keeping them), donate them to a thrift shop.

  7. I wouldnt throw them out, thats just a waste.

If you feel strongly on the issue, see if one of your friends will trade belts with you. So then the belts wont go to waste and you dont have the guilt of wearing them anymore.
