I'm thinking about buying slipcovers for my chair and sofa, but i'm not sure where/how to measure the width

i know, it sounds like a dumb question, but my chair for example is a huge fluffy t-cushion chair so if a slipcover says that it fits chairs up to 43 inches wide, does that mean the cushion has to be less than 43", from arm to arm has to be less than 48", the back has to be less than 48" or what? i'm completely confused.
