  1. You need to ask yourself a set of questions.

What programs are you going to choose (choice, choice extra, etc).

You also need to take into consideration on how many tv's you are hooking up. Each receiver is $4.99 ea.

Are you going to eventually go hi-def? If so, you need a different satelite dish than a standard.  Even if you dont have a hi-def tv at the moment. You should consider this option because the HD satelites are free if you are a new customer and are $199 if you are a current. I should have done this and regretted that I didnt. You also get "Demand" channel, similar to Comcast.

All the promos that people mentioned are for 1 year only. After that you are paying full price. You will need to enter into a 2 year contract (unless they changed it recently).

By the way. I have Directv and will never go back to Comcast.

I pay about $75 for 3 receivers w/1 dvr and have Choice Extra.

My contract is up in Dec. and will renew.

  2. I'm pretty sure that the $19.99 promotion that lumber_jackson mentions is only for a limited period, probably 3 to 6 months. After that, it jumps to the standard rate, which is around $40 once you add local channels. HD channels bump it even higher.

If you can live with just NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, CW, ion and PBS, you should consider using an antenna. Its free, and you you even get HD for free.

  3. They have a promotion at $19.99 for a decent package if you're a AAA subscriber. If not, it's at $29.99 for a year and then increases to $53.99 for the remainder of whatever contract length they put you on. DirecTV has great HD channels/packages but the commitment length is long, making it very costly in the long run. The channels are great, but sometimes, you'll get a bad customer service experience, making you want to cancel them completely.

$19.99 promotion will run for 1 year; 2nd year will then increase to the normal cost of the package; but you can probably call in and ask for a new deal.

  4. they are all really about the same it depends on the channels you get and different packages. but they are all very close in price. I would however recommend dish network over direct TV. because it is a lot faster when you are flipping through the guide and you can make different lists in your guide where you only see your favorite Chanel's which you select. I've had both and I like dish network a lot better.
