I'm thinking about joining the AFROTC at my University, I want to serve my country and do something meaningful

I am majoring in Environmental Engineering and I am a girl..I'm wondering if this is a good option. I have done my research and I have not been disqualified for any reason (medical, gpa...etc).

The AFROTC recruiter said that I sound like I great candidate to commission as an officer. I am considering entering the program as a sophomore. I am just wondering what kind of life will I have as an AF officer (as a woman).

Sorry if this question is a bit naive but the program sounds very exciting to me but I'm nervous that I will 'lose' myself in the process of training to commission. (3yrs training and field training before starting active duty) Any advice?

  1. Your selection of that branch has one decided advantage. One in five personnel in the Air Force is a woman. The highest percentage of all of the branches. Your collegiate discipline should be of value as well since there is political and community pressure at all levels to deal with some of the effects on the environment of air operations and maintenance of the bases to do those operations. So, it's a good "fit".

  2. If you want to serve your country, be a teacher or a doctor of help the homeless.  AFROTC, while a good stepping stone to a career in the Air Force, is over-hyped.  I was in AFROTC...they beat a lot of things in your head - kinda scary...Most of the people I know who actually went into the Air Force are bored silly and wish they had never joined.  The one person I know who likes being in the military has been in a lot of combat and actually seems to enjoy shooting people...scary guy.
