  1. Look, its probably going to be bad this year. Its only May and we have already had some rain and really cold weather, that's early! In a bad year the rains can last all the way through September! Listen what "ramblin robert" describes is really the "best case scenario." In the D.F. the daily rain can start anywhere from 3:00 pm and last from an hour or two, five or six, or right through the night! And there are only three types of rain here in summer: heavy; really heavy and "South India monsoon."

If it rains really heavily for several hours, the drains back up and the water level can rise to three or four feet! Once or twice per summer you will see in some suburbs cars actually floating down the streets! In a bad year this will happen SEVERAL times. In some outlying suburbs the levels have actually risen to 8-10 feet! (no, I'm not making this up, I live here in a pretty high area and on a few occasions have had to sandbag the front door!)

When you are here, you expect rain every day. And if you are going to be out late it pays to have a plan, "just in case." People have been stuck on the freeways in 3 feet of water for hours in this city. If you won't be at home in the late afternoon (best idea) then plan to be close to a place that doesn't flood too badly where you can get: good food; lots of beer; and ESPN........ and just ride it out until the cars, taxis and buses stop floating by.........

  3. forget the rain, watch your wallet!

  4. it's not that bad. an hour or two almost daily, usually around 4pm. after that it clears up and usually returns to being a nice day. take a medium weight (waterproof) jacket that has a hood on it and keep it in your backpack. ilive in toluca, about 40 km from the big city and its the same here more or less, except it doesn't always return to being a nice day because of the altitude here. i find that an army field jacket works best for me, but you may wanna choose something more 'fashionable.' good luck......have fun

  5. the rainy season seems to have alredy arrived.

if its not over in june, it usually rains a little in the evening but you will enjoy sunny mornings, till about 4 pm, and then after 1 or 2 hours of rain (light to heavy) a nice weather night.

  6. The rainy season is far worse between mid July-late September, but you might get rainy afternoons in June everyday. Mornings will be slightly cloudy and slightly cold and the sunlight will dissapear more and more the later it gets until it rains around 3 or 4 pm for an hour of two.

It doesn't rain as heavily in the State of Mexico, but if you insist in touring the DF around those hours, I agree about just going to a bar for a beer or going to a movie theater for 2 hours. Why stand up in a wet miserable bus during rush hour pointlessly? Avoid the subway if the rain is really bad because it can flood and you can be stuck in a dark wagon cramped like a sardine with people everywhere for 40 minutes. Rain falls worst during rush hour afterall.

The DF is backwards about fixing the sewage problem, so it isn't impossible that some streets will flood and cars will float. More reasons to go to the movies. Most movies here are in english with spanish subs and tickets cost about 5 dollars (not counting in movie theater candies and sodas which is a ripoff).

Bring a small single person umbrella in your backpack at all times if you're in town at that time of year just to be on the safe side. Even if it's sunny at 12 pm, it can still rain a 4 pm.

Chances are the rain will stop before it's nightfall at that time of year and flooded streets sometimes return to normal by 11 pm.
