Does PS3 support all the functions/features (1080p, True Dolby, etc...) of a Blu-ray disc player?

  1. It has some VERY minor limitations but for $400 the PS3 is a steal! Dude its like buying a solid Blu-ray player and getting a wicked gaming system for free.

And it gets better with each firmware update (see the article below).

  2. PS3 is great, full featured player.  Great icture, great sound.  It is up to current 1.1 specs, and Sony will issue a software upgrade to bring it up to 2.0 specs.

Since PS3 is a full blown computer, the chances are that it will be upgradable to the new specs as they come out - better chances than with a stand alone player.

The only CON hat I found is that there is no ON/OFF from the remote.

But there are lots of PROS:

It is also a great media center - I upgraded the internal HD to 320gb, and have all my HD home movies on it!

    Great game console

I think PS3 is the best deal on the electronics market today! (almost as good as Bear and Sterns at $2/share)

  3. It can decode TrueHD and has all of the important features of a Blu-Ray player.  It is the most fully featured blu-ray player in its price range.  However, it cannot decode DTS-HD MA.  The one caveat is that it does not support IR Remotes out of the box.  You can get a nyko blue wave remote and have most (not all) of the remote functions you'd have on a stand alone player.

There really is nothing else in the league of the PS3 in terms of blu-ray players.   Your next best option would be the Panasonic player.

    See http://reviews.cnet.com/4370-9991_7-197-... for cnet's take.

  4. It supports all of the same video features such as 1080p, etc.

The sound is a BIT different, but you will not notice unless you have a 5,000$ Audiophile system. The Blu-Ray standalone player supports a higher bitrate for audio than the PS3 does.

Make sure to use an HDMI Cable to get the full resolution of the PS3. You CANNOT see Blu-Ray quality unless you are using an HDMI Cable!

We sell 1080p HDMI Cables on our website starting at 9$ per.
