No it comes with regular  A / V  cables so you should be ok

speaking from experience you HAVE to get and hdtv.

i bought my ps3 and played for the first couple of months on a standard tube tv, sure it was great, better than ps2 or ps1 or xbox but didt really LOOK that much beeter.

after going hd, buying and hdmi cable and 720p tv it is AMAZING. to be honest the difference is bigger when your going from ps3 SD to ps3 HD than when your going from ps2 to ps3.

besides hdtv arnt really that expensive nowadays, i got my 32" lcdhdtv for like 600bux.

jus make sure you go lcd not plasma, plasma burns in when playing games.

You can use it on SDTV too, no problems. My PS3 is on standard TV.

You absolutely do not NEED an HDTV inorder for it to work..

If you want the best picture that the system is capibable of giving.. You need at least a 37 Inch HDTV. I think that is for 1080P.

I would recommend the upgrade for the TV because it looks amazing!! I know some people just can't afford both at one time so I think you'll be ok without it as well.
