I'm thinking of buying a microwave oven. Is it a good idea?

My mom comes back late from work everyday. I think a microwave oven will do great to reheat the cold dinner. But my sister is against it; saying microwaved foo is harmful to health. Is there any truth to that?

  1. Just do it.  You can get what you need for under $100.00.

  2. It is convenient but it does heat food to Hades and make it taste like polystyrene. I've a feeling it's not so good for the vitamins and minerals. Some meats and fish turn to poison under partial reheating.

If you can whack foil on something and put it in an oven on a low heat, or serve it cold with a nice bit of salad, that would pobably be nutritionally better and taste and look better.

But I have done the microwave thing myself and am not one to judge!

Its really nice of you to try and think about what will be good for your mother. She is lucky to have you.

  3. Provided the microwave oven is functional and the casing is not damaged, and it is used according to its instructions, there is very little risk to human health. A microwave oven should emit only 5 milliwatts per cm² at a distance of 5cm from the oven - far below the level that presents even an outside risk to health.

If anything, conventionally cooked food can be more harmful to health than correctly microwaved food - the charring on food cooked in an oven or frying pan is slightly carcinogenic (cancer-causing), which doesn't happen with microwaved food.

  4. its not harmful..people used to say it was but if you think about how many people who actually have them and use them and are completely fine then im sure you will see that they are safe..otherwise they would have been taken off the market long ago..its great for food warm ups..the only thing i dont like to use mine for is to defrost frozen meat..Sometimes there can be bacteria in the frozen meat (ie salmonella) and i dont trust using a microwave to defrost for this purpose.Other than that i think they are a great addition to a kitchen..And i guess eating cold food isnt very appetising.

    Best of luck

  5. well.. i dont know.. maybe because it releases a lot of radiation.. how about buying toaster ovens instead? they're more useful than the microwave ovens.

  6. The food is fine. The supposed harm is the low levals of radiation one is subjected to by standing in front of it. You are subjected to more radiation from the sun or an x-ray.

  7. No truth whatsoever. Microwaved food is perfectly safe to eat. They're used in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities.

A badly damaged microwave might be unsafe to use--but probably wouldn't work anyway.

Our family would find it hard to do without ours.
