  1. Depends on what you want to do with it.

http://www.cet.com/~pennys/faq/smfaq.htm  is a start.  I'd also suggest checking with your library for John Giordano's Sewing Machine Book and Carol Ahles' Fine Machine Sewing (at least the first few and last couple of chapters).

If you've got the budget, I'd suggest an electronic machine for versatility and the stepper motors driving the needle.

  2. I.m also thinking of buying a sewing machine -not for me - but my 18 yr old daughter wants one.

She doesn't really know what she wants - just wants to experiment I think.

Which country are you in? We are in England.

I came across a guide to buying a sewing machine on Ebay a few weeks ago - but I've just tried now and can't find it.

I am just about to start researching this for her.

You can mail me through this website if you have any information. Or if your email is private - send me a message - then when I get some information or advice or good offers - I can send it to you.

  3. buy a Singer  they are the best and last the longest . . when they do break or need adjustments parts and service are easier to find than other brands . . . I've worn out a dressmaker and a brother but I'm still using my grand ma's singer and I purchased a new singer w/ all the embrodery stitches 3 years ago (no complants)
