Question:

I'm thinking of buying another parakeet...?

I already have two budgies(parakeets) and i really want them to mate and have babys they are about 11 months now, i have a nesting box in the cage and they havent mated yet.

Do you think i shud buy another parakeet? or maybe 2 more parakeets?

I have a fairly large cage, so it would be able to fit all of them.

Also, i have another cage, so before i put the new birds in the cage i wil put them in the other cage first just in case my other birds decide to hurt them, because they might think they are intruders/enemys.

So i will put the new birds in another cage NEXT to the cage where my birds are in at the moment.

If i buy 1 Should it be a boy or girl?

and

Should i buy 2? They will be a girl and a boy.

Thanks

  1. Buying more would only create problems. They are young yet and just might need more time. When they are ready, they will breed when the time is right. Just be patient. And dont forget, some birds are just not compatible. Mine didnt do anything for quite sometime. At about 18 months of age, they bred.

  2. Before you start breeding go out an buy and read manuals on parakeets so you not only have basic information, you'll also have a good idea on what extra suplies you'll need and what problems you might end up facing. Are you familiar with egg-binding? Are you capable of handfeeding babies? Sometimes pet parakeets really don't know how to be good parents.

After reading up on parakeets,if you are interested in breeding them, a VERY large cage that can hold several nesting boxes would be necessary for 4 or more birds.

Birds need to be over a year of age to be mature enough to safely breed. They also need a special diet.

You may not need more birds. If you  still are interested in expanding your flock, you can get a girl and a boy.But you need to make sure that the birds get a long with each other. There may be some jealousy and fighting to attain dominance.

  3. buy two but keep them away from the 2 you already have. set the cages next to each other and let them get used to each other without physical contact. then take them in a closed area and let them out of there cages in sessions. after 4or 5 weeks ( 3 or 4 sessions each week) merge them all into one cage.

  4. i would buy two that way if thay do get kicked out thay have each other and might have baby's just make sure you don't mate before thay are 12mths old

  5. Well I would go for just one parakeet make it a girl and remember don't listen to everyone you hear about bird s*x trust me I have had the problem and it is a good idea to keep in deffrent cages for a week or two if the fight reapeat if this goes on for a long period of time seperate them,

    best of luck,

    anmllver

  6. i say buy 2 because then there would be 2 couples

and they could choose . but there could be fights.

  7. You should buy two because if you put all the birds in one cage then two might pair up and one would be left by itself.  If you buy two then every bird will have a partner.  That's a good idea to put them in one cage and let them gradually get used to each other.  Good luck!

  8. I think you should buy 2 because then there would be 2 pairs and both of them would be having babies. If you are having another budgie then I think it should be a boy.

    1. Cause they are easier to tame and talk

    2. The female will now have a choice of who to pick.
