  1. yes just get a ps3 because it's about the same price and it upgrades through firmware updates so it will always be up to date... plus you can play games and do other various things... good investment.

  2. Originally, I thought that a blu-ray player was a blue-ray player, so I bought the PS3 since it seemed logical that it does so much and is easier to update the firmware.  After talking to someone at the Magnolia home theater store I found out that the blu-ray player does not support some of the newer types of audio decoding.  If you plan on having a 7.1 surround sound system get a stand alone blu-ray player that has all the decoders.

  3. yea just get a ps3 much better deal the bluray player works just as good as bluray players then you can play games as well

  4. Blu-Ray DVD players are extremely expensive.  They range from $399 to $499 depending on the model.  Furthermore current models cannot be updated with upcoming features like picture and picture, bonus materials online while you are watching the movie or about the movie you are watching.  Sony has announced these features will be released sometime in October 2008 and when new Blu-Ray players are released at that time.  Until then current Blu-Ray DVD models will not have these features and can not be updated to the specification of Blu-Ray 2.0 update.

Sony has stated the only current Blu-Ray DVD player that can be upgraded is the Sony Playstation 3.  This is the video game console that has a built in Blu-Ray inside.  The Playstation 3 will cost you $399.99 with a 40 GB system.  Before you decide to purchase a Blu-Ray ask yourself this question do you want to play video games or you just want to buy the Blu-Ray DVD player.  Honestly most people buy the PS3 to play games first and that is the purpose of this console but because it has a Blu-Ray DVD inside it then people would secondly enjoy movies with it.  Otherwise buying a Blu-Ray DVD player alone when the prices start dropping would be a better choice.

  5. I will try not to sound up my self when I say I have both a PS3 and a Sony BDP 500. I first got the PS3 when It came out and loved it, and it is great for both gaming, and excellent for watching movies, its fast and easy to update. HOW EVER, two months ago I decided I would go out and get a dedicated Blu-ray player as well, simply because the fan noise from the PlayStation was driving me nut ts! That was my sole reason for buying the standalone blue ray player.

Also just so you guys know, you can update your Blu-ray players, just check the Sony website, you just use a Blank CD and download an ISO from the Sony website.

So basically if you want a good cheap Blu-ray player, get the PlayStation, but if you relay enjoy your movies, then get a standalone player, the audio from mine is better (the picture is the same) and there is almost no fan noise.

  6. The PS3 is considered by many to be the best Blu-ray player, BUT it is reported that it can't support some of the advanced audio formats which players due later this year will support.

BUT before you buy make sure you can benefit from Blu-ray. Unless you are preprared to spend a lot more for video than necessary with DVDs consider carefully.

Unless you have a reasonable sized (40"+) HDTV with HDMI input (and ideally a 1080p model and good surround sound system with support for advanced audio formats) you won't get a huge improvement over DVD.

See the link for a visual example of the resolution difference between DVD and Blu-ray. It's significant, but not "night and day". Furthermore the differences seen in the example are optimal, and are decreased on a 720p HDTV and can become imperceptible if you sit at traditional distances from the screen (10'-12').

Finally, players are expensive and disks are significantly more expensive than the same movie on DVD.

Blu-ray may eventually replace DVD, but it may remain what it is now, a premium priced alternative.

Even if you decide blu-ray is for you, unless you really need to buy now, you would be wise to wait for prices to fall, player selection to increase (later this year) and disk prices to come down.

  7. right now the ps3 is the best bluray player out.
