My partner and I are thinking of hiring a wicked van to go on a road trip around the south island. Can anyone tell me if they have had any bad experiences with Wicked??

  1. When we were travelling in the South Island of NZ last month we noticed quite a few Wicked vans around and didn't notice any problems with them.  However, petrol was around $1.70 a litre, so it would be worth finding out how expensive the fuel cost would be.  What we did was hire a car and use Youth Hostels.  You can hire medium aged cars at a reasonable rate.  (We paid $45 a day for a medium sized 4 door automatic). We booked double rooms (some with ensuite) and it cost us between $55 and $85NZ per room a night, although it is much cheaper if you stay in dorm rooms.  Also, some of the YHAs are in fantastic locations.

  2. I havent been in one. But the other ones to look at are the "stray" ones i think they are called they are the orange ones round town ive seen them. good old chch. if you do go on the big trip try and go to stewart island fantastic place!!!

  3. I don't know if this would be a viable alternative for you, but my stepbro toured NZ in a bike and loved it!

  4. Not Wicked.

Their vans are painted with a 4 inch brush and look scruffy. The use only older model vehicles, and most have obscene slogans painted on them that may be funny to 10 and 12 year olds.

They are not self-contained and on this basis alone they are not welcome in alot of towns, stopover places and motorcamps, but combined with the paint jobs they are even less desirable.

Yes, they are cheap, but they are probably not economic all things considered.

There are many other companies offering what you want at reasonable rates. Try Space Shuttle, or check out the yellow pages.
