I'm thinking of not using the Frontline Plus on my dogs during winter, what do you think?

Okay both our dogs spend most of their time inside. Our tick season is mid mad thru september. I'm thinking of only using it from March-October. I don't want to overuse it and that is chemicals. I have also heard that a dog that has overused it the ticks are immune.

Anyways I know that it bothers them when applied but its necissary during tick season.

What do you think and what do you all do during the winter months. I've talked to quite a few people that are doing this.

(also this is just their flea and tick preventative, not their heart worm pill that pill is a must)

  1. We use K-9 advantix, which is the same concept, flea and tick prevention. Last winter we used it all through the winter because I was afraid to stop using it even for a little while and getting fleas in my house. That would be the only concern I would have about it. I would say you would be ok on ticks but I dont know if fleas go away completely for the winter. And since you have your dogs inside most of the time, just as we do, that would be a concern I would think. To make absolutely sure I would ask your vet if the flea activity dies down enough in your area to warrant this action.

  2. Of course dogs needs flea and tick prevenative year round, all it takes is a warm day and one flea or tick to give a dog a nasty disease.

Why would it bother them?  I put it on all 5 of mine, and several fosters, every single month - never had a problem with any dog on Advantix or Frontline Plus yet.

You will have a lot more problems if you don't put it on them, people don't realize how many diseases fleas and ticks carry.

  3. I stop using Fronline plus after Oct. on my dogs. So I think you should be fine. I do it every year and my dogs are happy! lol

  4. Well the vets states that every month is ok. I would for sure call your vet and ask her this same question cause even though I am not sure if the fleas are completelty gone during March-October so asking the vet first is best!

  5. I stop using it during winter & have never have a flea prob. In winter i make a mixture of ti tree oil, eucalyptus oil & lavender essential oils diluted 50/50 with olive oil and use (& reuse) an old face washer & after visits to parks etc, give a quick wipe over the body. These are natural flea repellants & smell nice!

  6. We do not use Frontline Plus during the winter months for our dogs and they have been just fine. We restart the frontline when it starts to get warm again.
