Question:

I'm thinking of offering my services as a muralist, what do you think?

I love to paint and draw and went to school in Boston for it, but have not done anything professionally with it. I did a mural in my sons room recently and want to know what people think. Do you think people would pay for a mural by me? I like to do mostly animated styles.

The peter rabbit one was from his nursery when he was a baby, now he has the jungle theme.

Thanks and be honest!

  1. Nice work!  Sure, some people would pay.  You deserve perhaps $500+ for one of those but  mioght get  $200.  It all depends on marketing.

  2. As an interior designer, I appreciate your talent and think you could do it professionally.  That being said, what seems to be popular on the left coast are scenes rather than just one image.  For example, we did a "Where the Wild Things Are" jungle scene similar to the jacket cover of the book with the little boy (whose room it was) in the picture.  Parents love to see their child in the mural.  Another popular theme is provincial France wine terraces, Italian country sides, Mediterranean (like Greek) countrysides.  To keep busy and making money, you may want to broaden your scope.  Most of the artists we work with have a portfolio of several hundred designs representing a wide variety of themes.  I understand you cannot post all of your work here, but you may want to start putting together a portfolio of your work, hook up with some interior designers in your area (personal visits work best) even make up some postcards to leave with them representing some of your work (these are great when we are seeking someone to do a specialized mural some months after your visit and asking, "who was that artist...?").  Best wishes for success.

  3. If you are interested in painting murals professionally, I recommend you check out this site. It is for Professional Muralists who make their living doing murals and Faux painting. They have a very good forum with live moderators. They don't allow trolling, etc... They also have a questions archive so that you can look up a subject before asking. They are very welcoming to newcomers and will honestly critique your work. I have been a 'Lurker' there for some time.

  4. How Fun!  They are really cute!  If you decide to go through with your plan, I could see you getting work from preschools, day-cares, pediatricians offices, dentists, etc.

I work at a preschool and we've been trying to get one of our parents who paints to come in and do our four habitats that we learn each year on our fence beside our school.  I really think you could be successful at this if you market yourself correctly!

    Good Luck!
