  1. You should make up your mind as to whether you prefer long distance, medium distance or long distance.

Whatever you choose just know that practiceing WONT be easy so know what you are getting into.

Make sure you have the right shoes for your event.

Ice your calves, shins and ankles everyday. Also use icee hot if needed.

  2. well you need to know if you are into running long or short distances and then what type of spikes you need and what brand works best for you and the legnth you are going like the 100 400 800 1600 or 3200 or on a relay team like th 4x1 or the 4x4

  3. Know that it is going to be a lot of hard work.  It helps to know what distance(s) you want to run, but the coach will be able to guide you in that area.  The distance you run will also determine what sort of shoes you will be needing.  You will definitely need a good pair of general running shoes--lightweight, cushioned, comfortable, and lowtop.  You may also need a pair of spikes (if you opt for short or middle distance).  Guidelines for the types of distances (these may vary slightly depending on who you ask): short--100m, 200m; middle--400m, 800m; long--1500m, anything over 1500m.

Make sure to stretch properly before practice, especially at the beginning of the season.  Also, if your coach doesn't tell you, ask about ways to avoid shin splints, the bane of runners everywhere.

Mostly, just go in expecting to do a lot of work (ie, run a lot) and you will be fine.

  4. Here's some stuff I learned recently that would have helped me a lot:

    1) Wear shoes.

    2) Don't trip.

    3) It's the pole VAULT and the javelin THROW...don't get them confused.

Besides that, if you're doing it and you love it, who cares if you're a top performer. Just do what you like.

  5. 1) it is going to take up a large portion of your time

    2) do you want to run distance (it is hard but rewarding), Sprints (so you think you're that fast, huh?) Mid Distance (prepare to hurt), Hurdles (don't fall!) or One of the other events such as: High Jump, Long Jump, or pole vaulting (most people do HJ & LJ in addition to actually running but if you pole vault than it will probably be all you do).

    3) Are you willing to sweat? You're going to have to work no matter what event you wind up doing (except sprinting).

    4) Do you know anyone on the track team? A large portion of track is social, you dont wanna do track without any of your friends (although i'm proud to say that I met most of my friends while doing track or cross country).

I highly recommend that you join. I run distance now but originally was a sprinter. I hope you end up joining the track team!
