I'm thinking of starting a computer program in my community to teach young kids and adults how to use a PC, surf the net, use Microsoft office programs and HTML. Do I need any certificates or licenses? I live in NY is it required for me to have a licenses or certificates?

  1. Here is a good place to start. If you can't find what you're looking for online there is a contact number where you may be able to get some information. Good luck in your new business venture :)

  3. You either will need to get a nonprofit organization, government agency, school or community of faith to sponsor this effort, covering it with their own liability insurance, hosting the event on their own site, etc., OR, you need to form a nonprofit organization.

In approaching potential partner organizations, you will need to show how this program will assure the safety of the children involved, how you are qualified to teach these children, a criminal background check on anyone that will be involved in this endeavor showing that no one has any convictions for violent crimes or crimes against children, what your teaching method will be, and how you will measure success of your program (how will you be able to show that it is making a difference?).

  4. You aren't required to have any certificates. However, you will have to register as a company. Also, the people who register will likely want to see that you have some sort of qualifications in order to teach. I wouldn't take a class from someone who didn't have a proper qualification - like computer certificates or something.
