  1. Except you can't change lenses and it's not that good in low light.  Other than that, the DP1 is fine. ;-)

If you want to take "photos" and not "snapshots", a DSLR will give you much more flexibility.  But be prepared to pay for it with lens costs.

  2. IMO the way to go is with a DSLR. Although Canon and Nikon offer some nice entry-level DSLRs, don't ignore Sony and Pentax.

Both Sony and Pentax have their version of Image Stabilization in the camera body. Every lens you use will enjoy that benefit, instead of just a select few - and you don't have to pay for it with every lens.

Check the features of the Sony A200 and A300 and of the Pentax K200D and K20D. You may discover more features and benefits for your money than you'd think.

  3. Whoa, two completely different types of cameras. But I actually have both...

For the compact style I have a Canon SD750, they have ones with more mega pixels now but the camera in general is awesome.

I have also had a few of the Casio Exilim models, and they are great too, very stylish.

I also just bought a Nikon D60 DSLR, very awesome camera if that is what you are going for. Takes great pictures and the menus are easy to navigate. Also the D40x is very similar to the D60, very small changes that can save you a few bucks if you don't mind not having the latest and greatest (in that price range).

    Good luck to you.

  4. check out the Sigma DP1. its kinda pricey, but def worth the money if you want DSLR features in a compact body. the sensor is actually from a DSLR

  5. I have a Canon Rebel XTi DSLR and I really love it.  It takes great pictures.  Sometimes, too good because it brings out every wrinkle and blemish. :(

But it is definitely more complicated to use than a standard point and shoot.  There are a lot more settings and things to understand, I still haven't quite gotten the hang of using it on anything but the Auto settings.  And it also isn't compact.

If you just want something simple and lightweight, I've heard really good things about the Cybershot cameras.

  6. Sony, eh? Well, prepare yourself for a lot of much better cameras.

I've relied on Kodak point and shoots and own a Z885, which has been fantastic as a point and shoot. I've been using Kodaks since the 2.6MP dx2600's came out about 8 years ago.

As for DSLR's, I use the Nikon D60. At 10.2MP, it offers more versatility for the dollar than any other DSLR out there. Since I dont shoot action shots, I went with the Nikon over the Canon.

The Nikon D40 is also a good choice, albeit a 6MP choice. But, at about half the price of the D60, it might be worth it.

When looking at cameras, I look for a fewer specific things:

    1. iot uses a universal memory media such as an SD card. I refuse to buy electronics that use proprietary memory like the Sony memory sticks and those xd cards that olympus forces on people

    2. availability and price of accessories

    3. ease of use

    4. features
