Question:

I'm thinking of whether to replace my old carpet with some wood laminate flooring. ?

Does anyone here have it? What does it look like? Was it hard to lay and what should I prepare myself for? Was it a hassle to lay over old floorboarding? Would I have to invest in some professional tooling to lay it effectively? What colour/style of wood would go with a (sort of) light beechy coloured wardrobes (its not real beech, its just that general light yellowy colour, the material is something fake that begins with an M...) a black settee and patterned black bed cover. And could I get some general tips aswell? Other than that can I get a recommended place to buy from where I can get cheap stuff that looks good and wont be under heavy scrutiny, and also doesnt look like cheapo plastic. My room is 16m2, and I've found some that would cost £85 to buy that I like the the look of. I really can't be spending a fortune as my parents aren't contributing, and they are the type that go for the expensive authentic stuff (which they also won't buy)

  1. I cannot answer about the laying of laminated flooring, but can tell you the following.

I have just moved into a house with laminated flooring throughout and before I was used to carpeting throughout..  It is so easy to keep clean and with just a couple of rugs on the floor makes the whole place seem much larger and modern.

Buy the best laminate that you can afford, it will pay in the long term.

    Best of luck.

  2. I would go to the Pub, you nonesense.

  3. my son did ours he had never done it before and he made a fantastic job of it.you can get a free leaflet showing you how to do it from major diy stores or look on the net for advice.

  4. you should get it done professionally because any mistakes will show up  in the near future

  5. Yes we have it!

we just bought a new home and did it throughout the house!

as well as our old house.

you do need tools but thyre about $5 each

except for the cutting tool, which is expensive but worth it.

i dont kknow where you live, so i cant tell ya where to go

spend a couple hours driving around, asking stores and such

    but i say DO IT!

    it is BEAUTIFUL!

  6. Don't bother. Get a new carpet nice and warm not cold like laminate flooring. Ripped mine up after two years. Hope you have not got dogs or cats as there brakes don't work on it.

  7. Firstly, to make a decent job you really need to be quite good at DIY jobs generally, it's hopefully going to be down for a long time, I've laid several in my own home and for relatives.

Like all DIY jobs, preparation is the most important job, unless your floorboards are PERFECTLY flat you will need an underlay of some sort, fibreglass boards are best, or just hardboard sheeting which is fixed with panel pins 9"  apart in all directions.

There are not many tools you require, a good fine toothed saw, hammer, set square, a profile tool for shaping around door frames sometimes, a block for tapping the boards in place, a mitre block if you are putting an edging strip around the floor.

You can buy the flooring and all the tools you require at any good DIY store like B&Q, Great Mills also carpet stores likeAllied Carpets etc. shop around, all will come with full instructions.

The last thing you need is plenty of time and patience, good luck.

  8. while it looks nice,id go for a new carpet, seriously especially the living room.it shows up every single bit of dust/fluff going and youll get fed up of cleaning it.
