i am currently covered under husband's work insurance with Cigna PPO. my union offers insurance and i'm told it would be considered secondary--picking up the remaining 20% of what our PPO doesn't cover. (they pay 80% after deductibles.) the union insurance is bluecross, but the lady said it would go by guidelines of our cigna PPO and pick up the remaining 20% after we've met the PPO's deductibles. does this sound right? i just don't want to buy it, and get stuck paying premiums for nothing, like a lot of people who think they're getting secondary insurance.

  1. This is possible and does sounds correct.  For secondary insurance, the premiums are usually lower.  Since you are having a baby, I would go for it.  Your deductible should be taken care of just from the routine doctor visits before even giving birth.

  2. Doesn't sound right.  Normally, if your husband has insurance, and you have insurance, the policy through YOUR employer is automatically primary.

  3. That's right. The BCBS is not going to cover your Cigna deductibles; however, they will pay the remaining 20% after you pay the deductible. I think unless you are in really bad health and apparently you are not because you are working that you are over insuring yourself with two companies. Why don't you just keep one insurance, is the BCBS free for employees? If so, keep that and let your spouse keep the Cigna. You don't need two insurance's.

  4. The answer by magoo&me sounds correct. If it were me I would just put the money I would have paid for premiums on the second insurance into a savings account.
